fd went to 02 in japan. 79-80 is the sa/fb. and 81-85 is just the fb. everyone calls them fb's though in that year span.

No one mentioned that these id's come from the vins. All 3rd gen vin numbers start with fd33. Vin break down for you



JM1 FD 33 1 * P 0 ####





JM1=Mazda Passenger car



FD=RX7 3rd gen Series



33=Coupe



1=1308cc USA Spec



2=1308cc Canadian spec



3=Maunal seatbelts and Dual Airbags



*=check digit



P=1993



R=1994



S=1995



0=Hirshoshima Plant



####=Serial Number

There's got to be at least one other plant. And by no means is the whole car assembled there.

I've been told that the Rx7 fb came out in 1980 with a 2L piston motor. I guess that guy was smart and to top it of he worked at a parts shop.
