Ok, I've been lurking for a while, but seeing as how I'm almost to the point of having my car running again...

hello. i'm div. Living in Memphis, TN. Got an 88 SE N/A that I've been carrying around for over a decade. She's been sitting for the past 4 years as where I used to live She had to pass emissions, and with a rusted out exhaust they wouldn't even look at her. So, I moved 5 miles away where there are no emissions requirements. She started immediately and drove like she'd never sat. I tagged her out, cleaned her up, and was going to start driving her again. Was taking her for a spin the other night and floored her coming out of a U-turn on a little back-road nearby - the rear broke loose, she spun nicely and then... ran lake crap. Threatened to die the whole way home, did die at a stop sign, didn't want to start back but got her going. Pulled into the cove, and my girlfriend came screaming - "you're car is on fire!!". It looks like the cat clogged hard, and then blew out the exhaust gasket at the first pre-cat. There was a jet of blue fire a foot long shooting out from hole while that turned to nice yellow flames when the car died - all the grease and gunk burning off. A blast with the fire extinguisher put it out. It's nice and clean now.

Amazingly, the car seems unhurt. Compression is mid-90s front and rear. RB replacement pipe and pre-silencer are on the way.

I'm a little wary of RX7Heaven... They built the engine that's in my car now back in 98. $3k for a stock rebuild, and as i'm digging into the motor (it's sat in storage for several years, but no one has worked on it since then other than myself) I keep finding little things... like the EGR valve is there, but all the lines to it are capped... the air pump tensionor bracket wasn't attached to anything... the day i drove it home from having the motor replaced i discovered (when i pulled into my driveway) that they had neglected to tighten the hose clamps on the fuel lines and i was spraying gas all over the engine compartment. The car is an 88, but somehow i now have 86-87 injectors... little things... the car ran fine, and it still does (mostly), but i'm wary of them now.
