I am frustrated. My 1987 RX7 is giving me fits and no one has been able to solve the problem. Intermittently, the engine will sputter, lose power, then come back to life. I had a Mazda dealer keep it for one week, but they said if they can’t recreate it, they can’t fix it. I brought it to two local mechanics, they tried a few things, but the problem still exists.

Symptoms:

Car starts to drive fine, then it will start to buck. Loses power, spew blue smoke, Catalytic converter turns red hot. If I pull over to the side of the road, sometimes it self-corrects within a minute. More consistently, if I turn off the engine, coast and pop the clutch, I have a 50% chance of it going away. For a 90% solution, I stop the car for several minutes and restart the engine and it usually works.

I have turned on all other electric switches in the car at the time of the incident and they all work.

I have replace the CPU with a used one, no change.

I have had the wires and plugs changed, no difference.

Any suggestions?
