Question

I'm going upstate- 4hr trip with some chick I'm seeing at the time. It's a beatiful fall day around Sept./Oct. I'm ruinning my street ported 85 GSL-se with Delorto carb, full street-strip exhuast, clutch, etc. I just upgraded my fuel pump and fuel jets to compansate for the porting job. The cars running great and feels like it has more strength up top. I'm doing about 85-90mph in fifth gear, at like 3500rpm's which is like cruising speed for the rotary, when I see a big fat wide *** BMW 850 coming up form behind me. I don't know if it's because he see's me or he's in somekind of huge rush, but before I know it he's blowing by me like I'm standing still- with the power only a tweleve could create.

Ya and maybe most guy's would be freightened by such a show of force, but this just get's me excited, because I know this guy's a player and it's going to be good! So with that I drop 3rd gear, (yes 3rd gear) which I used to do once in a while with my first gen. when I felt I needed it. I touch 3rd for like two second just to bring the rpm's up to a usable range then wale on 4th until I hear the buzzer, which I let ring for at least another four or five seconds before I begin to shift into 5th. It takes a good minute but by then I'm on this guy and eventully pass him. Not as strong as he passed me but just the fact that I passed at all I think suprises both of us.

At this point I leading, but his right on my ***, my passanger is dead silent, road conditions are perfect (clear, no-moistur, thr road is windy and twisty but no really sharp turns) I'm in fifth, rpms are up in the sweat spot and were do about 120-130mph and the road is open ahead. We come over a slight hill and I'm still leading, but as we aproach it he find the opening and passes. I follow close behind. 120, 125, 130, 135, 140 were coming down of the hill catching mad speed my speedometer rounds 145 and he's still accelerating, so I keep accelerating. The road is straight and I'm accelerating hard in fifth when the buzzer goes off again! I never heard my buzzer go off in fifth gear before. because I never had to push my car this hard before. I can't tell you for sure how fast were going at this point because my speedo is now fully max'ed out and I'm not even looking any more, but it has to be more than 150mph.

We start to enter some slight bends and I can see his ultra wide tires flexing and starting to give way just in front of me. I'm running 15in P-zero's myself, but I starting to wonder if his much larger car with his much wider tires are starting to loss traction is my little guy going to be able to hold on?

Good run. Did you keep on going or did you back off. It's like the end of the story is missing.

850s are cool cars, my boss has one. they are heavy as hell though. a friend of mine took one in his 1.6 turbo mirage a few weeks ago.

I don't have exact figures on the horsepower for the 850, but I do know that it was BMW's top gun at the time. Anyhow what ever it had, was more than my first gen was putting out, that's for sure.

850CSI's at the time had like 350 I think from the V12. BUT only an automatic, no manual's were imported to the states.

4,100ish lbs. and something like 326hp. And of course, the already mentioned automatic.
