Hey, I'm just about to send in my JET application, and I haven't decided what cities I'm going to request... so if you've lived in Japan, what city do you think is best and why?
The kind of things I'm looking for: - medium-sized city on mainland - not crazy crowded like Tokyo, but not the bfe either - lots fun things to see/do (places to party, good resturants, and touristy stuff) - lots of hot girls - not overrun with foreigners (like not by a military base or anything) - fairly close to some other major cities |
I had fun when I was in Kyoto. It was SO scenic there. Osaka was fun too, but it was CRAZY busy.

fukuoka was great. i just got back from a tdy with the airforce there. the night life rocks, the chicks are as easy to pick up as a handgun in harlem, and the cars there are bad ******* ass too. i would love to go there and spend more time. to top it off the girls love americans. if your into raves and **** goto a club called Q's on sat night they have two clubs, bottom floor is rave and trance, top floor is house and acid jazz. also the crazy **** was pretty cool too. there are no military bases around there. i think that the navy is like an hour and a half away. i got to goto a small town called Tsuki for a joint military exercise with the JASDAF. it was a lot of fun. well im out and good luck, even though it sounds like you dont want the competation of the military( getting girls).
later sully |
Thanks for the responses so far...
What do you guys think of Kobe or Nagoya? I was reasearching this for a little while last night and both of these cities seemed pretty good... Also, it seems like places like Saitama or Kanagawa are just bedroom communities of Tokyo and therefore not very fun or interesting, is this generally true? |
whats a JET application ?

http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/jet/ Basically, you teach English to middle or high school students in Japan. Anyone with a Bachelor's degree is eligible. The pay is pretty good, and the work isn't very difficult, so it's a good way to see and experience Japan. |

so, naturally you would have to speak fluent japanese? :(
I'd be very interested too but i'm shitty at picking up foregin languages |
The Japanese are taught english in their schools, so fluent Japanese?...no...BUT, enough Japanese so you don't get lost?...YES
|
Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kyoto, or Osaka would be one of my choices. Fukuoka is friggin' awesome!!
|
|
Anything within 30 miles of Tokyo is just too damn crowded!!

But seriously though, my chances of getting placement anywhere around Tokyo is pretty low, because most people that apply request that area and there's only a few positions available. Anyway, you can request up to 3 cities, and these are the ones I decided on, in order of preference: 1) Nagoya 2) Kobe 3) Nara |
i like fukuoka, great baseball team and u have space world
|
Personally I would live in Fukushima Ken, almost anywhere is ok. It gets cold as hell there in the winter but the land is beautiful, there are big enough cities to have fun in but most important Ebisu Circuit is there so I could be there every weekend.........hell yeah thats heaven.
There are no americans there only a small handful of other foriegn people. I usually go there twice a month at least to race and see my son.... its a lot of fun. |
I went to Nagoya in 89-90... boring as ****.. lot's of really boring people.. kinda like Bible thumper territory in the USA.. and cold as **** during the winter, but near Nagano if you like to Ski... They have a lot of earth quakes around there also.
Kobe is full of Yakuza.. but probably a lot of fun... but lots of bigger earth quakes.. and I don't know where the hell Nara is... Why don't you try to come to Okinawa.. you'd love it here and you could hang out with us.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png |
The Yakuza...
Are they as bad as American TV makes them look? |

So I guess going over there to practice massage therapy on their women - cause we all know some of the most beautiful are some of the most dangerous - would be a bad idea? :smirk:
|
LOL... as long as you pay them for it so they can pay their master your good...

You know, like take a train to Kyoto or Osaka or someplace on the weekends and stuff. But I'd love to come visit you guys on Okinawa if I go, and check out all your cars and the scene down there. How much does it cost to travel between the mainland to Oki and how long does it take? |
It's a 2 hr flight that runs around 20-30,000 yen depending on the time of year (tourist season = expensive), If you but the tickets well in advance it's much cheaper... Just let us know when your comming in advance so we can try to find a place for you to stay..

Good luck dude, I also applied for the JET program next year. I had to apply for the ALT position because I only have like 1 year of Japanese under my belt and I have forgotten most of it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png But the ALT is cool. I spent a few weeks in Japan a few years back and met up with some JET people in Iwakuni. They were all very cool and had different opinions about the program. All of them generaly enjoyed it though and were having a good time. Maybe we will both get accepted and a be two wild and crazy gaijins.

Speaking of Nagoya, here is a funny music video about Nagoya I found:
http://www.geocities.co.jp/Milano-Killer/6...6421/nagoya.swf It's all in Japanese, so it might not be very funny if you don't understand Japanese. "Tokyo ha maa akan! Nagoya ga shuyaku!" |
