FikseRxSeven 05-03-2003 09:39 PM

would that cost....... more ......... less....... or about the same as buying someone's interior?

rx7trix 05-03-2003 09:41 PM

I spent about $120 on the whole project

94touring 05-03-2003 09:41 PM

I hear ya man, nice job!!

rx7trix 05-03-2003 09:44 PM

Got 6x6 foot sheet of carpet for 34.00 shipped.... 3 cans of 3M 90 adhesive spray glue $15 each..... 1 roll of 24" x 25 foot insulation...got it at Lowes..looks like bubble wrap but silver... great for killing road noise and heat!. bout 5 hours of my saturday..and she's done!

FikseRxSeven 05-03-2003 09:47 PM

what did you do with the leather surrounding.......? and the clorth trims that are tan?

rx7trix 05-03-2003 09:47 PM

?? explain...??

94touring 05-03-2003 09:48 PM

Damn you know I didn't think about reducing heat that way. I wish I had put something down when I did my carpet to keep the temps down during the summer.

FikseRxSeven 05-03-2003 09:49 PM

you know how tan interiors have tan walls and ceiling....... and tan cloth trim on the edges of lets say the sunroof. how do you turn them black?

rx7trix 05-03-2003 09:50 PM

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png I use it on all the cars we re upholster... works great!!!

I used Flat black vinyl Dye from advance auto parts.... I recommend preping the surface with 400grit wet or dry sand paper... wiping with alcohol and spraying... if you want added protection follow with a layer of clear coat

rfreeman27 05-04-2003 12:52 AM

humm you have me thinking https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

jspecracer7 05-04-2003 01:05 AM

Wow, good job! Of course, makes me glad my interior was already black https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

Srce 05-04-2003 01:14 AM

Ah, sound insulation is soo sexy and Bling Bling. Is that Dyna Mat? (sp?)

rx7trix 05-04-2003 09:26 AM

Not sure what it's called... but it's on the same Isle as house insulation at Lowes $25 for 25 feet... it takes 25 feet if you do it right.

rx7machine 05-04-2003 10:20 AM

The finished product looks good. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

ThirdGenRX7 05-04-2003 10:33 AM

did you keep the foam on the bottom of the carpet?

No for 2 reasons... 1. you will destroy it if you try to remove it from the factory carpet and 2. the insulation I used is much better for reducing road noise and heat. I simply took a utility knife to the carpet, and removed it in sections, then I hand picked all of the cotton fibers left over off the metal (not all of it just the loose stuff). after i removed all the carpet, I threw it away... save the plastic carpet clips from either door sill because you can re-use these on your new carpet.

Fd3BOOST 05-04-2003 12:01 PM

Ok looks really good.

But how did you compensate the height difference in the flloring with the foam gone.

See I have a square hole cut in my foam where i keep my PMC purple. With no foam it would be sticking up in the floor.

Know what i mean?

Also how did you address **** like the interior light control plastic, sunroof eding material, seat belts..

Could you tell me what kind of carpet you use and where to buy it if it is a specialty carpet?

If it's just your pick at carpet country then I can handle it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Fd3BOOST 05-04-2003 12:03 PM

Oh and the headliner, what did you do with that?

I used 3 layers of insulation in parts that needed to be built up. As for the plastic, I removed all of it and used the vinyl dye to change the color, same with door panels and such (remember to sand with 400 wet or dry) ... as for the headliner I just taped off all the windows and stuff, and sprayed it... (a mask is a good investment). Seat belts i cut and let flip back into their holes, I'm using a 4 point racing harness and black corbeau a4 seats.

I'm very pleased with the results, you can't tell the interior was not originally black.

rx7trix 05-04-2003 12:56 PM

The carpet I got from http://www.resonation.us Foss/Ozite Multipile is the type

ThirdGenRX7 05-04-2003 03:18 PM

the only thing I don't like is now your carpet isn't flat... it's the shape of the frame.. which is why i was asking about the foam

I wouldn't think it would be too hard to buy some extra foam or something similar and fill in the floor so that the carpet becomes flat again.

rx7trix 05-04-2003 05:02 PM

you can build it up more if you like... I'm pleased with the results it's really not that bad the flash makes it look more uneven than it is. plus after you put your floor mats back down it's all good

9BASE3 05-04-2003 05:35 PM

Looks great. Now I'm off to Auto Zone...

What seats do you have?

Fd3BOOST 05-05-2003 12:03 AM

DJ Blu 05-05-2003 12:59 AM

damn... i'm glad i came across this.

this is one of my planned summer projects.

i have an 87 t2 w/that ugly red 80s interior and i wanted to make it black.

nice job!!!

FikseRxSeven 05-05-2003 01:16 AM

that seriously looks too easy....... im scared that once i rip everything off it would turn into a nightmare project

there goes the lazy side of my brain talkin

9BASE3 05-05-2003 01:28 AM

Go to google and type in vinyl dye. You can get some great kits with all the cleaning and prepping materials. I'm doin it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Corbeau A4's

AgentSpeed 05-06-2003 02:14 PM

Very good info. I just bought my 3rd gen and it just has the tan carpet and seats. I hate tan but I wanted a white one. I only found very few white cars with black interior. I will definately be ripping the tan out now!
