Ok, I am soon to be the owner of a 1990 RX7 GTU, and one of the the things horribly wrong with the car is the stereo, it is a complete loss, but I was wondering what the sizes for the speakers are, and possibly some suggestions for replacements for the stock speaker locations that would sound decent, but hopefully not cost me an arm and a leg, any comments would be appreciated

In the dash they are 4". In the doors they are supposed to be 6 1/2" but I haven't opened up the doors yet (my 90 GTU had the shitty system with 4 speakers) In the back they are also supposed to be 6 1/2" but to my surprise when I took the covers off they were 3 1/2" with a metal plate holding them in. I don't know if that is stock but they looked stock. I put a Infinity Kappa Perfect 6 1/2" component set in the rear and fabricated a mounting plate. They sound great but aren't cheap. I had the Infinity Kappa triaxial's in my old car and they sounded good too for the price. It really depends on if you are into sound quality or not. The infinitys have real good sound clarity and definition. Also JL Audio makes a real nice set of component speakers. Hope that helps

hmm, dash speakers you say? interesting, I may have to investigate, and see if the rx I am looking at has them, and yes, I do value sound quality over sheer loudness, however, I am on a bit of a budget, about $0 for the next year or so as I pay off all the stuff I owe

I didn't realize mine had dash speakers until I looked in the Haynes manual. On the d/s they are located about where your left knee is. The grill is integrated into the dash so it is a little harder to tell. there are slots though.

those dash speakers are almost useless, concentrate on the rears and doors.

i believe 5 1/4 will fit in the stock adaptors? i'm not sure 100% about that though.

i'm running door speakers (infinity reference, ) and dash speakers and it sounds great. if i were to add to the system id put a 8" sub in the rear

I took out the rear compartments of my 88 and made boxes that droped right in

and I have two 10' pioneer tsw subs in there. I wont win any sound off competitions

but I like how they sound and I can cover them when I park my car and no one knows they are there.

I'll shoot some pics if you guys want.
