Paint Question
#1
I am getting ready to paint my stock hood. I already stripped all the old paint from the top. I have it sanded smooth right now. I am gonna shoot it with Zinc Cromade, Then prime. What type of paint should I be using and what clear? I assume PPG paints? Also any other words of advice as far as surface prep?

Well following up, I picked up some etching primer. I think it was a DuPont product. So no need for zinc cromate. Now would it matter if i use Dupont or PPG paints. I mean to ask will the new paint match the old paint if I am using a different brand? I know that the paint code is universal, just not sure how much variation is there. Also is it best to use a base coat/ clear coat as opposed to and Acrylic Enamel. I would assume that the base coat/ clear coat would yeild better results. True or no?

sorry- I had 20 people here for a BBQ, was a bit busy yesturday.
Ill assume you used VariPrime, good choice. You will have to grind
and sand it all away in the repair area, body filler doesnt stick
to it at all, no biggie though as you would have had to do that
anyhow.
I would definitly without a doubt tell you to get a good filler
primer, I still use and swear by DuPont URO prime.
Its a 3 part primer, when its dry you will wetsand, by hand, the hood
with a block. This will insure a smooth surface for the paint, especially
with the body work and the stripping you would have done to it.
Personally I dont use PPG paints, I have used them dozens
of times at people's request and I am not as impressed with the
results that I get from ChromaBase, I also only use Imron
clear, I am done playing with other clears that are more productive,
meaning they dry faster and are a bit easier to work with in
the post painting process- wet sanding and polishing.
Everyone has thier ways of doing things, the hood you had on your car
seemed to have good paint, im sure if you use whatever was
used on the car before you will be happy especially considering
your car is garaged and not left outside like my cars are.
