My brand new, less than 1 year old paint is starting to crack/peel on the front passenger side of the front bumper. Of course, It s partially my fault, as I slightly hit the rear of my friends car in that spot....but not THAT hard.



Is there anyway to stop the paint from cracking/peeling anymore?? Help please!

Hmmm, pictures will have to wait. I don't have a digicam, or know anyone who does. For now the only way to describe the cracking is that it right underneath the outside corner of the FTP lense, It hasn't peeled off yet, but the paint is lifted from the surface of the bumper and is spider-webbing outward. Right now the affected area is only about 2 sq inches.

Stop hitting the bumper, and it will stop peeling. Either have it fixed, or ask for some touch up paint and try to touch it up, as long as you STOP HITTING the bumper, the paint might not get any worse, not like the thing is going to rust, but I would at the least if your not going to get it fixed, try touching it up around the edge to keep water from getting under it and lifting the rest up, if there are big loose pieces of paint hanging off, just pull them off and maybe with some light sandpaper sand around the edge and touch it up. Do you know what kind of paint they used on it, and was there any body work done on that part of the bumper when it got painted?? In your area of the country, you could probably get that bumper painted for $100 or so, around here its $200-$250 for a bumper paint from a GOOD shop. There are those nice ghetto shops that will do it- hardly sand it at all, no flex agent in the paint, and of course the lovely laquer primer they like to use because its so damm cheap. Another thing they are all doing now is using these really shitty clears.

Yeah, I knew I was going to get **** about hitting something. I BARELY tapped my buddys car! I really can't believe the paint is coming off! The bumper was redone a YEAR ago! I think it must have been a shitty paint job.

Its not noticeable to anyone else yet, but I noticed it and just want to stop it from getting worse. I took a toothpick and some epoxy, then I stuck a tiny bit of epoxy underneath the little pieces were lifted then pressed them back down. I did this just to stop the spreading.

Thanks for the advice on the paintshops. I'll be on the lookout now. What's a good paint? DuPont? PPG?

Both, I believe are formidable manufacturers, however the best finish in the world wont work w/o proper preparation of the surface. To most of these shops, prepping a car for paint means scrubbing it with some scotchbrite and water. They dont take the time to actually sand them.

DAWN takes grease out of your way! Hows that hood and headlight doors holding up anyhow? DuPont actually reccomended me to use Dawn dishwashing liquid to wash a top for a Jeep, they are made from a weird composite, I had to paint my boss's top black for his Jeep, and I asked them what they would reccomend, and the first step was to wash it in Dawn, they told me to use that brand specific, among other steps of course.

They're doing fine. I just need to wash the car. :o I'll do that soon. Right now I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do about my motor. I can't decide if I should pick up a Cosmo 13B in So. Cal or just have my TII motor shipped here.
