So the 06 mazda3 with 60k on it now has metal shavings in the oil and the check engine light lit. I needed to get to work yesterday so I went to the vert which has been sitting in a feild for 2 years now with grass past the windows... She fired right up and drove with no issues. The unreliable rx7 will out live the 3.

What kind of oil? The MPV says only use 5w-20, which is like water. I'm running synthetic, but still 5w-20. I think I'll start using 10W-30. Thin oil might give you better gas mileage, but I don't think its going to let your engine last. Somebody tell me I'm wrong.

5-20 when i do it at home. i took it to the shop i worked at before twice when i was pressed for time i believe they used 5-30 still yet i doubt that'd caue such an issue so early on. Some eople are trying to tell me the 5-20 may be to thin. Any opinions on this? im drunk so please excuse my grammar if its a little off

we had no trouble at all with the mpv's.... we did see the 3's that didnt get oil changes, or when the oil doesnt get changed right, and it gets low, to have the rod bearings fail

at most mine would have gone a few hundred over on the milleage but never low on oil. I ordered an obd scanner today tomorrow ill go check the codes to get that done. my next issue is if the 3 is down vert has to get me by for a few weeks. Checked the oil in it and found its now over full. Its taking a while to crank which i assume is building the fuel pressure so possibly its leaking past the oil control rings while sitting and we all know what that means... It smoked on start up but given how long its been sitting i didnt expect much else. Now im wondering about that to. Would be my luck to have 2 cars that need rebuilds at the same time

got it on a scanner today. was throwing a code for evap leak but i couldnt find anything. did the real time to check the other issues, idle is sitting at 600 in park drops to 500 in gear. ignition advance was 10 degrees at idle which seems odd to me? pulled coil packs and plugs and it looked ok. Going to stay on the safe side and replace the plugs next week and the oil to something heavier see if it helps any. Someone have some better ideas?

Evap code could be something silly like a fuel cap gasket?
