You rock, Ito!

The source of my passion is simple. I beat on cars. My rotary loved it. That is all.

Judge...you are the way the light and the truth BROTHA!

I got my 7 in 1995 when I was a junior in high school. My best friends older brother had just bought a dirt bike and was looking for a pickup truck to haul it in. I had one, and we traded even up - my Ranger for his 84 GSL-SE. Honestly I got the car cuz it was light years cooler than the truck an knew nothing about it, but after doing a little research and finding out what I had fallen into, I was in love. The uniqueness, the drive quality, the engineering perserverence by Mazda, and the fact that these cars are sick performers keeps me interested. I love that the first year the 7 came out it was named import of the year...and again when the FC came out...and again with the FD. Now the REnesis motor is International Motor of the Year. I love explaining to other car guys how the rotary works. I love saying "there's no pistons" and "it's only 1.3 Liters" and "It's a front/mid engine car with 50/50 weight distro" while others scratch their heads. I love pulling up to a stoplight and having someone ask "hey that's got one of those rotary motors huh?" and then having them decline to race becasue I answered yes. All these things make me love my 7, but I think most of all it's the camaraderie between 7 owners and rotary enthusiasts that is really special. It just seems like everyone involved with rotaries is starstruck and here because they love this motor and the rx7. It's awesome to see another 7 on the road and give them the wave and get an excited wave back. Who else does this except motorcyclists? It's a great thing..a nice little private group who knows. You see another guy drivin a rotary and you can bet that within the last 20 minutes that thing has seen the redline and that the guy DRIVES the car like he stole it. I like that. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png

I used to work with a guy with an FD. at the time i was just getting into cars and didn't know much at all. I knew rotaries existed, but that was about it. He explained most of the way it works, at least to the extent i could understand at the time. Later that year he let me borrow the car for prom, sadly, I wrecked it. I had never driven a car with that much power or RWD (i had only been driving a year at that point). It was a sad sight.

Anyhow, at that point I decided I would sit back and keep away from RWD til I got a little more experience. My best friend however decided otherwise. He was in the wreck with me, and hadn't started driving yet, He ended up buying his first car a month later. Low and behold he came home with a 1st gen rx-7. Shortly after I got my turbo colt and that could blow the doors off most imports in town So i still wasn't interested in digging into a different motor.

After a few years of work on the colt, my best friend decided to move out of state and unloaded his car on me for 100 bucks. It was just an 83 and it had been beat to ****. The motor still runs very strong with 130k on it though. From there on I just fell into it. I've always been into sleepers, so i never really got into FD's and other 'nicer' looking cars. So plans started to develop for a first gen (a 79 i am swapping a t2 shell for next month). I love how high the motors can rev, how the cars handle, and espeically how fast they can get. i also love the fact, that if you can do your own porting and work, everything is fairly inexpensive in the long run, and motors interchange fairly easily.

Wankel did not invent the rotary.

1gendreemer 12-19-2003 07:07 PM

As a pure idea, no...but he is credited with most of the research and development. Thanks for splitting hairs though... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/dry.png https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683621.gif

The rotary is unique because it has no reciprocating mass other than the oil pump drive chain and whatever float occurs with the apex seals. It is 100% balanced and experiences only mild shear stress on the eshaft.

But unfortunately, it suffers from poor thermal and combustion efficiency. It is great for a sports car but bad for a daily driver.

Passion? Heh, more like love for the car it happened to have built around it.

It is art

x pistons with x cams = y

Ito bridge port = special art form

there is no standard for the rotary. the horse power it makes in directly related to the love it is assembled with. that love is richly rewarded just ask anyone driving an engine that they put together. i am sure even the Judge has built an engine stepped back looked at it and said wow that is gonna fly. it is more than the sum of its parts

merry christmas
