where do all the letters go?

when you're typing and have to hit the backspace key. where do the letters you get rid of go? should we be conserving letters?

The government pays a small town to host a huge letter dump. Sure it smells bad, but all the residents are driving BiNtlEys.

I just read about this in US News and World Report. Seems some of the residents are having second thoughts now that many of the new mothers in the town have given birth to babies with extra digits.
