are wider wheels better for raceing im thinking either 16s or 17s for my 85 gsl se but i dunno how wide to go

depends on conditions, i.e. smooth or bumpy roads, and on what you want to do, what sort of racing are we talking about?



but for a first gen, I don't think you'd ever need more than 15" wheels. Bigger than that just doesn't look right anyway.
