I'm pretty sure "heat exchanger" is a generic term for anything that's supposed to dissipate heat. Radiator, intercooler, oil cooler, whatever; it's exchanging heat to somewhere else.

Strictly speaking, a turbo/super-charged car could have five (or more) so-called "heat exchangers".



1 Radiator

2 Intercooler

3 Heater core

4 A/C condenser

5 A/C evaporator

My understanding of a heat exchanger is the condensing/evaporation stuff that makes a fridge work.

i came across HEs while looking at cobra performance stuff. do these generally use water to cool or air, or either?

Air to Water Intercooler.



Same aas on my truck. They also call them "plasma" coolers because

they don't necessarily run water. It's another coolant - aka Plasma.
