What do you do that pays the bills?
Former Electrical & Mechanical Engineer with the Canadian Forces (wrench bender & gun plumber), now working in the film industry as a writer/director. I also run http://www.rotorhead.ca
I am a Senior Software Engineer for an IT consulting company. We mostly write web apps, and I am a tech lead for server-side Java projects, typically. We did a number of dotcoms during the boom, but smartly changed our focus toward more established companies early enough to stay in business through the crash (though we did have some layoffs -- unfortunate since we lost a lot of good people). Most of our clients are big financial and entertainment companies now. I love my job -- I get to learn lots of interesting stuff and apply real software engineering practices (that we choose, rather than bad processes foisted upon us) rather than just hacking most of the time. Plus, I get to work with a lot of smart, dedicated, cool people (this is the best part). I feel very lucky to have a job that I like during these troubled times.
