What I need: Wifi, and Microsoft Office. Maybe I'll put Itunes on it. Watching DVDs wouldn't be bad, but I'm not considering that a requirement.

That's it. The cheaper the better. I don't want to spend money on a bunch of **** I don't need.

As for laptop vs. desktop, I'm okay with either. Laptop is convenient, but desktop is less likely to get dropped or have **** spilled on it. If I get a laptop, it'll need some sort of plastic cover on it.

Suggestions?

I'd suggest building a cheap barebones kit from Tiger Direct and installing Ubuntu Linux. It's free!

IBM Thinkpad, best computers I've ever owned. I just picked up a used X61s for 200 with windows 7. Metal shell for protection, fully seals to protect it, the keyboard has holes built in so if you spill anything on it, it will drain straight through and never touch any of the electronics.

That requires learning a whole lot of stuff I don't feel like learning. Like how to shop for computer parts, how to assemble computer parts, and how to use linux. I can barely use a "regular" computer without constantly wanting to throw it out the window.

Computer guys are like bad college professors, they can't remember what it's like to not know the stuff they know.

Sold. If I get a laptop, I'm gonna get that one.

My brother has a desktop that he gave me, which promptly broke as soon as he turned it on in our house (we break computers just by being near them). I might have someone try to fix that one. If not, laptop it is.

Not just laptops. Several digital cameras and ipod touches have met their demise as well.

Staples has a HP on sale just about every week with 4-6 G Of ram for around 300 dollars. Add a monitor for around eighty dollars and you have a system that would have cost over a thousand dollars two years ago. Do not buy any software. Download Open office for your office application and AVG free for antivirus. This will give you a quality system at a very reasonable price. I have purchased 7 of these in the last 6 months all with Windows 7- 64 bt sys
