So it's pretty much a 4 door sedan like any other, nothing to report there, sticker price was 24k, I drove 7 miles, reset the average mpg meter and I BABIED this sucker around town. Got 34.1 mpg, driving around 45 mph and only a few stops. Not impressed, when they first pitched it they were talking 40 to 55, the sticker on the window now says 29 to 40, which I believe after driving. Plenty of get up and go, car rides ok, but I aint spending money on the diesel to get 34mpg with a 25% more expensive fuel.

teknics 06-25-2008 08:24 PM

dont do it.

swear to god volkswagen is the anti-christ. you'll kick yourself or sink it.

turbo diesel on the other hand rocks, and will be what ill be shopping for next, not a wide array of options tho.

Gal at work has one... and swears she gets 49 MPG (She has the GOLF). If I baby my 350z I can get 26+ ish... But it's not worth it driving something so boring. Then again I only drive 20 miles a day.

phinsup 06-25-2008 09:55 PM

She doesn't have the new bluetec tdi, they aren't actually available yet and the soonest they will be available will be September in the jetta only to start.

j9fd3s 06-26-2008 12:13 AM

i roadtested a mazda 3 for some lady, and with the windows down a/c on i got like 35, not on the freeway either. hell dads 320cdi mercedes is rated at 37highway, and beats it, he does like 39.9. if thats not impressive, its faster than the gas one....

ColinRX7 06-26-2008 12:16 AM

diesel used to be tons cheaper than gas. when gas started going up quickly, diesel was still hovering around 50 cents. then boom.

in the wake of this so called "energy crisis" the price went up.

1988RedT2 06-26-2008 06:08 AM

Much of the appeal of a diesel goes away when you factor in much more expensive fuel. I always wanted a big diesel truck. Now, not so much.

This will be my next purchase, I hope to be able to commute to and from work (6 miles each way).

Manufacturers seem to have focused no effort on fuel efficiency, we've been looking for something over the 40 mpg milestone, **** my mother inlaws 91 integra gets over 30 city, the new ones don't get that anymore, I dunno what it is, but I hope they all go broke for missing the boat.

Exactly! Cars have gotten bigger, faster, and heavier, and as a result, they guzzle gas. ****, my '89 626 got 40 mpg highway. Now we've got 40 mpg hybrids that can't get out of their own way. This is progress???

teknics 06-26-2008 06:59 PM

the only way to get efficiency is to sacrifice everything else, or so it seems.

my evo got 28mpg the other week. i was amazed.

Well aren't he CAFE standards going to FORCE them into getting better mileage?

I suspect $7.00 a gallon gasoline will do a better job of that. The meaningless gesturing behind the CAFE standards is at least 10 years past due.

phinsup 06-27-2008 10:17 AM

The problem is still there, watch the ******* tv ads "gets 30 mpg", we should be saying "that car only gets 30 mpg?" We should be looking at over 40 city over 50 highway. Hybrids are no answer, the increased initial cost and the maintanence costs remain to be seen, who knows how much they will cost to maintain over the 50k mile range.

The euro spec jetta was getting average 55, at the time they had a totally different catalytic converter system because our fuels are so much higher in sulfer they had to put 3 cats in the us spec jetta and i'm guessing thats what killed the milage. **** I think the old TDi got better mpg then the new one.

i did the maths on this. if you buy a prius, and i buy a carolla, you have to drive like 300,000miles before you even break even with me. and you might be gay. i'm just cheap

phinsup 06-27-2008 01:38 PM

Yea the yaris is a much better buy if you want to save gas, you are correct it would take over 300k before the increased initial cost would be recovered and highly doubt the prius will last 300k you might be gay in a prius, you are definitely gay in a new vw bug

lol, yeah like a miata you COULD be an engineer, but in the bug, you're just gay

teknics 06-27-2008 05:33 PM

mazda's car's in europe get some good mileage, i think the mazda 6 diesel gets like 48mpg or something.

i liked the BMW Diesel vs Prius test where the bimmer beat it in fuel efficiency in city and highway.

kevin.

defprun 06-28-2008 07:16 AM

Fuel efficiency is just thrown around like a cheap dutch hooker, seriously.

I don't know if anyone has seen the dodge commercial showing their 4 cylinder cars getting....40mpg....YEAH RIGHT.

The truth is cars haven't gotten any better in that department I mean if you have a 80's golf diesel it would get the same or better gas mileage as a Prius. You want good gas mileage get a light car with a little tiny motor.

The insight just blows me away but its amazing how everyone likes to ignore the car that can actually get over 80mpg easily.

the problem is that people want a ******* economy with SUV space and luxury.. the car companies are afraid to make barebones practical commuter cars..

the old TDI vw did get better mileage according to your observation, so i think those will be the ones to hunt for.. there is aeven a company called ACME adapters that makes adapters to stick those tdi engines on all sorts of other transmissions. imagine a old fj 40 or fj55 or (insert cool old car here) with a newer diesel engine gettin decent mileage and still having like 150ish hp and lots of torque..

phinsup 07-05-2008 03:56 PM

yea unfortunately i dont need the headaches of that ****, i need a car with a warranty so the wife can get to work.

we'd take a smaller car, even as small as the smartcar, however it falls short of being worth the money, smart car only gets 39 mpg city.

smart car is the most amazing waste of time ever. it's super small and yet still gets "average" mileage. hell its SO small they say you can barely fit a duffel bag behind the seats....how is that thing not getting 70mpg? i still say you just go buy a honda insight and average 60mpg with highway rates of 70-ish. if you want it to look half decent take off the rear half wheel covers and lose like a few mpg.

It's almost as if someone from "the oil companies" learned of the plan to sell this so-called "smart" car in the U.S. and paid a visit to the manufacturer and said "We know that you can make this car get 75 mpg, but if you do, we're gonna break both yer frickin' kneecaps, and then we're gonna stop being nice." Then they put a gun to the design engineer's head and made him implement an extremely inefficient transmission that would allow the car to get half the fuel economy that one would expect from such a diminutive piece of ****. Then they all had a round of beers and laughed about it.

yea the old metro's definitely were a step in the right direction, then gm said "ehh **** geo, we can handle this ourselves" and promptly ran all those cars into the ground.
