Well a cousin of mine is thinking buying another car. He's kind've confused, He's owned an FD, but had to sell it a while back. So now he has his eyes on the new STI's and on a Supra. I just wanted to see what FD owners would choose if it was up to u guys. His looking for performancea and looks.

thnx hope to get some feedback.

RotaryXplosion7 06-20-2004 09:35 PM

i say STI more versital, more practical, and functional.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png

PrincipleOfEvil 06-20-2004 09:46 PM

I'm the first to actually vote on the poll. So I voted for the STi. Coilovers, boost controller, and exhaust. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Then...4 WHEEL BURNOUTS!

But why take a Supra since many of them are now being beat up? Unless, you can get a crate twin'd engine for this car...

Supra.... cause i love to save the whales.... JK

PhoenixDownVII 06-20-2004 10:36 PM

Performance? In what ways?

I don't see the STI as an all out sports car, or at least when it comes to the classic idea of one.

I got burned for saying this on SF (for some reason) but I just don't see the STI/EVO as being a sports car. Sure, its a "Sport" to rally, so to say, and its in a car, but its just not a "Sports car" as we've come to know (small, 2 doors usually, rwd, powerful, different, rare..).

So, what my point is, is does your cousin want a sports car? The STI has a sedan look, as "Good" as it is (I love it over the EVO and its ugliness), it's still doesn't please the senses as much as the Supra does.

AWD? Sweet! Great for launching and snow and perhaps handling! But RWD is funner IMO, and AWD is something I'd want on a car I'm driving in the winter time to be safer and that's that.

My vote is the Supra, as "beat up" as some come, there are good ones left! The weight (and price haha) keeps me from them, but you can NOT deny their reliability, and power.

spaceman Spiff 06-20-2004 10:38 PM

toyota makes great engines you just have to do some suspension mods so you are not like every other 1000hp supra that cant get traction.

defprun 06-21-2004 12:13 AM

Scooby Snacks!!!!

Eric Happy Meal 06-21-2004 01:03 AM

i say supra, gets way faster way cheaper. looks better, handles better, and with engines that can get 1K hp on stock internals, i think i stock engine would be fine even after being beaten on.

defprun 06-21-2004 01:06 AM

HP sucks if it cant touch the ground

Eric Happy Meal 06-21-2004 01:20 AM

it cant get traction off the line, but try taking one from a 60 mph roll.

I did... And my car had 130 hp less than him.

IWINULUZ 06-21-2004 03:29 AM

why put forth the effort of working on an opposed motor they are difficult to install anything on ... **** to install cam gears you have to pull the motor... i definitly choose the supra. if for some reason i could never own a fd again the only other car i would own would be a tt supra.

1gendreemer 06-21-2004 06:40 AM

I'd go STI...it's something a little different. Sure Supras are awesome cars too, but there's getting to be a lot of them on the road. I'm sold on AWD too...there's nothin quite like spinnin all four!

Black8 06-21-2004 06:50 AM

I don't like AWD...I love Toyotas...I'd take the Supra...

...so the rx8 isn't s sports car?...lol j/k

subie....supras go for way above their actual value, plus...nothing beats awd burnouts...

also, has he thought about an evo mr?

If I had trouble deciding between a new car and an older one, I'd choose the new one, for the warranty, and you don't have to worry about what the previous owner did, or what they're lying about.

"Getting to be a lot of them on the road"?! LOL, is toyota secretly making more of them?

They are and will always be more rare than a STI, just look at production numbers.

And brandon:

LOL Did you see top gears review of the rx8? "The problem here is that it seems like the executives at mazda didn't know what they wanted to make! Is it a sports car? Is it a passenger car/sedan?!"

Rx8 is a sports coupe I think, or sports sedan. If you go to a consumer guide (auto.consumerguide.com) you'll see the tag for the Supra being "Sports Car" and the WRX as a "Subcompact Car" or something. I think they say "Sports Car" for rx8 so you win that one :P

Erik 06-21-2004 10:13 AM

You'd be hard pressed to find a nice supra for under 25K. And one with low mileage would be at least 30K. I mean for a used car thats A LOT. And are you very apprehensive about buying something used...not "truly" knowing the past history of it?

On the other hand the Scooby isn't as pretty...not as moddable (yet)...but like someone else said has about the same stock performance, can be had brand new, fits 4 people, and handles nicely. They key is that it is brand new...you decide the fate for it https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

RWD is definitely more fun...but how often will you be doing burnouts, donuts, drifts? On a daily basis? If so then go with something rwd. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

banzaitoyota 06-21-2004 10:20 AM

Mitsu is not honring the warrenties on Evo's right now if you Autocrossed them :(

Boost Addict 06-21-2004 10:42 AM

Well there ain't not action without traction baby!

inanimate_object 06-21-2004 01:06 PM

Unless it's wet or you are going off road, AWD is a disadvantage, and despite the Supra's apparent drag shortcomings, it will blow the socks off a Subaru on any track with corners.

Mark

Midnightdriver 06-21-2004 01:16 PM

that was a hard choice...I love subies supras rx-7's I own a subie and a 7 & have had a supra...the thing that pushed me twords supra is the amount of power they can make on the stock block. and they still look great for an 11 year old body style...same with the RX-7

rdavidsrx7 06-21-2004 02:04 PM

If he is looking at a supra because of the engine and it's capabilities, shouldn't he consider the lexus sc300 from around '94. Didn't they have the same engine as the supras, just not turbo, thus making it very capable of handling a turbo, with a little aftermarket ecu magic.

Also I know I have seen tyhem going for like 12K with moderate mileage which allows a hefty budget for some initial mods....like the turbo, fuel system, and ecu to make it as fast if not faster than the STI.

Oh but I vote Supra otherwise.

Srce 06-21-2004 02:39 PM

I don't know, the Supra's WAY TOO overpriced for what you get. The STi doesn't pack enough heat for the price tag (bullshit LOL), and since I love the SRT-4, that's what I'm gonna go with. Plus, Van's are phat yo.

rotary510 06-21-2004 03:35 PM

Doesnt pack enough heat stock? yea right https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

I meant that you see the "Fast and the Furious" style Supras all over the place....I'm aware of the actual production numbers. Where I live you see Supras all over the place and it's cool, but it's still a bit more exciting to see an STI and I don't see as many of them. It's something different.

Hey what about doing a mixmatch. Swap the Supra motor into the Suby or make the Supra AWD!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

rowtareh 06-21-2004 09:43 PM

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif I thought if you started modifying the engine, exhaust, suspension that it voids your warranty all together? Even if you put on bigger rims?

Or I was just told the wrong thing.

Mark- I wanna see some more Supra's. There is only two around here, TONS of Subarus, but no SRT-4's. And no FD's at least on the road.

I would consider buying another FD, or even an TII. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

okay then do nothing to it for years b/c you will void the warrenty **** that. and if your basing that on previous problems of buuyying a used car ,im ssure they havent even found out ALL the factory **** ups in the sti yet. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png

Makes a good point there. If you buy a Supra it will have some type of problem with it also. Either new tranny, or just needs a new center console, who knows?

If I were going to build a race car only for the track or dragging, I would buy an older used car. Like it if was a honda(ha, very unlikely) I would buy a CRX. Not the new hondas. Fucks that. At least with the CRX I can spend the rest of the money I would've used on the newer car to modify do whatever I want to it.

depends dealership to dealership......the dealership that I bought my focus from told me that if i put on the svt focus rims it would void my warranty....but a dealship that carries ford racing parts said that the only thing that would void my warranty is a cold air intake....I could put on the exhaust, rims, suspension and it wouldn't void my warranty

Hmmm, interesting. Dealerships around here are real assholes. Somebody I work with wants to lower and put some decent rims on her civic, and it would void her warranty. I would understand if you melted the springs, it would void it. But if you lower the car just a bit, gives it better handling somewhat?

PrincipleOfEvil 06-21-2004 11:58 PM

Here's the question no one has asked.

Will he pay for his choice with a monthly payment or lump sum? Because, if he is able to take a chunk of cash from his account, then the Supra. But if he is going to do a monthly thing then the STi or Evo8 MR.

Indian 06-23-2004 04:15 PM

all the people I know that left the rear wheel drive world and gone to awd have returned. If he enjoys rear wheel action then 4wd will become so boring to him.PLUS have you seen the prices for sti parts https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png ?!?!?supra anyday.BAng of rhte buck between the two of them. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png
