Hey,

I was reading about some of you fella's driving xxx miles to get to an event or a car and such....

And I just thought it'd be cool to hear of what you guys do, when you are alone, or with fella's, and how you work it out.

As for me:

Twice a year I drive down to Myrtle Beach, SC to visit a friend I was supposed to stay down and live with after HS. The trip is about 10-12 hours from NY and I normally go with a family or friends:

So usually the trip is divided. But last time I had to take the trip on my own....for 12 hours. And it's I-95 THE WHOLE WAY.

I have a LOT of music, but it got very old after a while. Couldn't decide on loud/soft/acoustic/etc. Then I tried to think of a game to play with road signs but they all just pissed me off. And I notice I always look at the tripo to see how many miles it's been...when I see I've only gone another 10...it sucks. lol.

I like to travel overnight. 9pm-9am. The sun and the weather changes are annoying on the drive down, and the dark sky and sunrise is awesome to see as you drive.

Let's hear it.

phinsup 10-03-2003 03:08 PM

This isn't really a prep thing, but when i do long drives I gotta hop out of the car every couple of hours or so, sometimes more if I am sleepy, keeps me from going insane, even if it's at a rest stop or something.

apexkw 10-03-2003 03:11 PM

usually i stop and tell my friend to wake his lazy ass up and drive or talk or something...and if he does drive then i go to sleep!

phinsup 10-03-2003 03:13 PM

I can't sleep when someone else is driving, it's much easier for me to sleep when I am driving LOL

Travisty 10-03-2003 03:19 PM

i did a little 24hr stint from jersey to the keys.

my one friend and i.

we rotated about every 6 hours, and drove straight through.

made a little bed in the back seat, and brought some caffiene pills.

this 24 hr ride was without a radio or air conditioning in the middle of august.

just listened to a few gigs of mp3's with headphones on.

it was well worth it though and i would do it again in a heartbeat.

vosko 10-03-2003 03:21 PM

my friend mike and i drove 700 miles one way to and from michigan to pickup my T2. we just alternated and stopped for food and gas... it was an ok drive but throwing the trailer into a ditch definetely made the trip longer https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Sinful7 10-03-2003 03:29 PM

I stop every hour and get out for a smoke, even if on the side of the freeway. I don't smoke in the FD, lol.

mazdadrifter 10-03-2003 03:40 PM

Wow, cool., I'll check it out. I bet its not too safe to have on a regular day basis though (like too much caffeine).

Turbo II 10-03-2003 03:52 PM

i bring a chick along so i can get head while driving

Mr. Ashe 10-03-2003 03:55 PM

I smoke meth, I mean, red bull is nice and all, but meth keeps you up all week. And I'd like to see a canned drink do that!!

erm..I just take a break every half tank or full tank. Let the transmission cool off, stretch my legs, eat something...determine if the smell is me, or my engine..or..something else..

94touring 10-03-2003 04:13 PM

Lets see...i drove 33 hours in a moving truck, and if I had to do it over again I would pay someone to move my **** and book a flight.

Been drinking it for 3 years now. Wish I knew about it before then.

Its go the same amount of caffiene as a cup of coffe but it has a ton of sugar and other things like taurine thats supposed to keep your head clear.

Red Bull is my god.

teknics 10-03-2003 10:08 PM

i've driven from Wayne NJ -> University of Vermont and back with only getting out of the car to pump gas. At the college i dropped off a friend and drove off (was in hurry, had to make it back to work)

I didnt even stretch when pumping gas, i just pressed fill, put the nozzle in the tank and went back and sat in the drivers seat.

i think it was the speeding that kept me up though, i was on NY Thruway doing 110+mph in my durango, then from there got onto i think route 22 which was like a 1 lane each way highway, but it was all passing lanes, i was taking 10 cars at a time and **** https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png.

This drive started like 1-2am. I love driving what can i say.

kevin.

Jims5543 10-03-2003 10:16 PM

ahhh you must have had the 5.9 liter Durango.

na, 5.2L, crappy ancient technology.

it's speed limiter was 114mph, i hovered at 112 https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png.

Jims5543 10-03-2003 10:48 PM

I have a Dakota Quad cab with the 4.7 in it. Limited to 96MPH = Sucks.

First time I hit the limiter it scared the hell out of me.

FDRacing 10-03-2003 10:50 PM

why did it scare you? Did it actually do something? My buddies S10 turns off at like 95

Mr. Ashe 10-03-2003 10:52 PM

It scares me when I reach 110 in my mirage...scares me that I kept the pedal to the floor for 5 minutes..

Because it was pulling like a mofo then all of the sudden I was thrown against my seatbelt. It jerked the truck so hard it woke my wife up who just looked over at me shook her head and went back to sleep. For a split second I thought something broke.

FDRacing 10-03-2003 11:38 PM

Damn thats rough! His S10 literally turns off.

Gen2RXSeven 10-04-2003 01:12 AM

I took a short trip to orlando last weekend, first time with the Sable on the highway for more than 8 miles. still not sure how fast I was going, Ford is too cheap to have more than 85 on the speedo and I had the needle 2-3 inches past that pointing straight down at the steering column. was fun though, 3 hr trip only took 2 to 2 1/2 hrs.

as far as long trips, I usually just take a shitload of coke, coffee, cigs, and all my cd's (close to 200 CDs of all kinds of music), turn up the bass and I'm good to go. of course each time I stop for gas it takes me 15-30 min while I stretch my legs

UniqueTII 10-04-2003 01:49 AM

I usually sleep about 3 or 4 hours, then work 4 1/2 hours loading trucks at UPS, then make the 18 hour drive to NY when I go. When I drove the 7, the boost and stereo kept me awake. When I drive the Subaru, there's no radio, no cruise, and no power, so the only thing keeping me awake is the anticipation of seeing my family.

I'm driving about 21 hours today, and I'm running on about 45 minutes of sleep. Yeah, I'm fucked. I prepped the car earlier, fixing the shifter, getting the oil changed, and replacing a tire that was worn. Then I drank a car bomb thinking it'd help me sleep, but all it did was make me feel like I was going to die. Good plan. I'm bringing someone with me on my trip, so hopefully she'll help me stay awake.

Oh, as for the trip, I'm driving from Iowa to South Bend, IN to look at an '86 sport, then to Indianapolis to look at an '88 GXL, then to St. Louis to hang with 9BASE3, then back to Iowa. Crazy ****, all for the rotary! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

TYSON 10-04-2003 01:59 AM

Eat sunflower seeds. You gotta split em, get the seed out then spit the shell. Keeps your mind a little busy.

Then they make you thirsty as hell, so drink a Coke with em, gives you caffeine. Drink enough Coke, ya gotta piss. Can't fall asleep when ya gotta piss.

Stop for gas, take a piss, stretch your legs and start all over again. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

BTW, this's pattented, so send me $1 dollar each time you use it.

UniqueTII 10-04-2003 02:02 AM

I just drink tons of diet Dew and piss every 25 minutes.

BigWoogie 10-04-2003 02:26 AM

Drink a gallon of water right as you are heading out. Then dont stop. I just tell myself I cant use the can until I get to my location. I just speed like a maniac because I have to piss so bad.

Works pretty well, only pissed my pants 3 times so far https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

Digisan 10-04-2003 02:46 AM

I drove from San Antonio to Philadelphia. The trip was about 1822 miles, I made it in 24hrs flat. I averaged 76mph, haulin' azz! I bought a case of Moutain Dew (not diet crap) and listened to the radio. Channel surfing on the radio keeps you busy.

UniqueTII 10-04-2003 03:06 AM

Channel surfing = finding the local ClearChannel station. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

FDRacing 10-04-2003 10:48 AM

BigTurbo74 10-04-2003 03:08 PM

wow this is perfect! peng i'm headin over right now!

Apex13B 10-04-2003 03:11 PM

When should Red BullŪ Energy Drink be consumed?

Whenever you need to boost your energy or concentration!

To feel its effects at best, you should drink it in times of increased mental and physical strain, for example, on long sleep-inducing motorways., during intensive working days, prior to demanding athletic activities or before tests and exams.

It is recommended to drink one can of Red BullŪ Energy Drink about 30 min before the start of a concentration task or the start of a race or game in sports. This is about the time for the ingredients of Red BullŪ Energy Drink to become effective in the body

Apex13B 10-04-2003 03:13 PM

wiiings!

Rob x-7 10-04-2003 06:06 PM

some xenedrines will keep you awake as well.

Genom 10-05-2003 01:03 PM

If it's anything inside florida I just get in and drive, stopping for gas. If it's outside florida I usually take a break every 5 hours. I just got XM installed so at least music selection should be better than lugging around the 50 CD's I hear all the time.

Also if it's on a weekend I'll use the time to catch up with calling people using my hands free.

Of course, I havent done anything farther than 100 miles in the 8 so far, but if something happens in SC and ya'll aint gonna give me too much **** for havving a stock 8, I'll head on up! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

wraith 10-05-2003 01:22 PM

i took a 12 hour drive to southern part of tennesse once. drove straight through making 3 stops, one for food and 2 to relax.

UniqueTII 10-06-2003 11:27 AM

I ended up stopping to sleep twice on my drive this weekend. I knew I wouldn't make it on only 45 minutes of sleep. It ended up being over 1200 miles.

Baldy 10-06-2003 12:28 PM

it never hurts to pull over and take a catnap https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

UniqueTII 10-06-2003 12:40 PM

Yeah, a couple 3 hours naps and I was good to go. Between Friday morning and 5AM today I slept 10 hours...hot damn.

Srce 10-06-2003 01:26 PM

Hmm, I took a bet once from a friend of mine. I was supposed to go to St Louis and back TWICE in less then 12 hours and he'd give me the 500 bucks I needed for the Tempo. The trip is about 300 miles from Chicago to STL so you figure 4 times that much. 1200 miles in 12 hours, I made it barely because I chose to do it starting at 9Pm on a Friday night with plenty of Red Bull and loud music. I got a good nights rest before the trip and kept the car cold at all times. Heat is your worst enemy, it gets you sleepy and comfortable, so as long as you keep chilled and Red Bulled, you'll be fine.
