I need a new phone soon.. I want to get a smartphone with high speed internet (maybe GPS, but not a must) and a full qwerty. I currently have ATT and I'd like to keep them, but I'm open to switching if there's enough incentive. Keep in mind I'm anti-iTunes, so the iPhone is basically out of the running.

Suggestions?

9BASE3 12-29-2007 09:59 AM

Idunno dude... I freakin love my iphone. But mostly just because the chicks think I'm a baller. HAHA.

I hear a lot of good stuff about the new Blackberry?

phinsup 12-29-2007 10:28 AM

yay someone else you hates itunes and the iphone. I take back two of the mean things i said about you last week steve!

I've been with att since 93 when they were Cellular One in seattle, I've had a hard time being convinced to switch, but their service seems to be getting shittier and shittier. Verizon has some nice phones, they do have gps and the new one has touch screen and folds open to a sull keyboard. I dunno if that's what yer lookin for or not. I think you're only option on att at this point is going to be the blackberry like 9base3 mentioned and as far as i know att doesnt offer gps do they?

ive been rocking a blackberry for almost two years now

tough as nails, useful as hell

if it lands in water all you have to do it shut it off (it will still be on) and wipe it off and its good to go

its seriously alot tougher of a phone than it looks.. i wasnt sure how long it would last in a shop but its doing really well.

its well programmed and really practical. its saved my ass a bunch of times from forgetting info or losing info or forgetting to wake up

my iphone rocks, but im considering switching to verizon and getting the new voyager which is the phone scott just described with the gps, touchscreen and flip up full qwerty keypad.

a new iphone is supposively coming in february that will run on the faster 3g network, but as nice as their goggle maps feature is i think id prefer full gps.

I wouldn't need GPS - I have that in both my cars. although, it is a nice feature to use travelling with someone else. The google maps is really nice. I've actually used it LOL.

I got the iphone free so I'm not bitchin, but I think I'd like a blackberry. I dont use the music or anything...

Sinful7 12-29-2007 11:28 PM

Free iPhone, eh? How'd you swing that? I'm looking at a blackberry curve, I think. I also like the ATT Tilt (HTC TyTN II) and the Pantech Duo, though I haven't heard much about that one.

The other comparison that's important to me is the cost of the service contract- The iPhone has it's own dedicated service. Does the Blackberry service compare in value?

Leetheslacker 12-30-2007 02:58 AM

**** verizon. i hate the way their phones work.

that said, im a fan of htc phones. ive been looking at them for a while and played with a few of my friends and i like em.

you dirty man *****..

i had a pocket pc for a bit.. it was cool.. i like the flexibility of them since you can get all kinds of add on programs to do pretty much anything you need.. unlike regular phones which are very limited.. the pocket pc i had was an htc apache. big like a brick.. but nice touch screen and keyboard for its time.. i also managed to get a emulator program for it to play gameboy and nintendo games on it..

I am anti iTunes and was anti iphone, until today when I went to get a new smartphone, I tried the Internet on both phones. If you are getting the phone for internet the iphone is far better no other phone presents the web like the iPhone try it out just to see, its amazing

some companies make little portable laptop-like phones ... actually a damn phone-like laptop really.. they have all the flexibility you need.. plans and junk vary depending on what network they are compatible with.. and you dont get the crazy incentives..

The really scary thing about "smartphones" is that they will soon become far more intelligent than a majority of their users.

teknics 12-31-2007 04:33 PM

the biggest downside to iphone is that the internet isnt fully working like it doesnt play flash and a couple other things, plus not all websites are optimized for Safari, apple's web browser.

once they make an update that makes flash work the internet will be a lot better on it, thats probably my only real complaint.

same issue with pocket pc's .. i would really like an open source opertaing system on pocket pc's .. then the communities would make the addons for whatever the hell was needed

stupid enter button getting stuck I swear!

Sinful7 01-06-2008 09:02 AM

I saw a CES preview on yahoo tech today- Apparently apple is coming out with the iPhone 2.0 in 2008, complete with 3G support. I'm still anti-iTunes and anti-Apple in general, but I thought that was nifty. Also read that RIM is purportedly developing a touchscreen blackberry, with 3.5G GSM, GPS, full internet and 1GB of built-in memory. I'll probably hold out for that bad boy!

Baldy 01-07-2008 12:25 PM

I like my Motorola Q9m with Verizon, but I feel stupid for not being able to use all it's functions. Before I cut off my data plan, I liked using it for internet. What I do like is I can pretty much download anything, including flash players (youtube on the phone was neat). You can also download registry edit software, and I guess hack your phone (a friend of mine gets free GPS sometimes by messing with the registry), but that's too advanced for me.

I like the qwerty, the bluetooth, the MP3 abilities, and the mobile MS office stuff (excel, word). You can download/install nearly anything you would for a normal computer. Mini SD card slot can handle up to 8 gig.

Screen is glass though, I cracked the **** out of mine.

I spoke with a few smartphone owners and you're the first with a positive review of the moto Q.. I was also told to stay away from the samsung blackjack.

Can you elaborate on the samsung?

Sinful7 01-07-2008 10:25 PM

Well, I heard frustration with battery life, speaker quality, freezing... Basically that it was worthless.

G2G 01-11-2008 12:46 PM

they just came out with the blackjack 2. it supposedly has fixed the freezing problem, a friend of mine has one and loves it.

I am into phones like my wife is into purses. I have had just about every GSM smartphone there is, even ones from Europe that aren't available here (O2, Vodaphone etc) I have used the Treo 750, iPhone unlocked on T-Mobile) and the Blackberry Curve (Gold https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...) I am using the Curve right now, and I don't really want to go back to the Palm or the iPhone. I do too much typing with text messages and emails to use the iPhone all the time. It is a cool phone, but not for people who really use their phone as a work tool. Before I got the Curve, I thought the Sidekick 2 and 3 had the best keyboards on any phone. I now like the Curves keyboard more than any other one I have used. I have a 2GB card in it to store pics and stuff. Camera works great, and has a flash which the iphone doesn't. I can also use the WiFi to make calls and not use my minutes unlike the iphone which has wifi but doesnt use it to make calls.

So my recommendation is the Curve from ATT, or the Curve from T-Mobile if you want the wifi calling option. I personally won't use ATT since I dont like them at all. T-Mobile is cheaper and better with service for me (hense the unlocked iphone https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...)

vosko 01-11-2008 11:27 PM

i have a sprint q. its decent. i got it and data service stupid cheap. i didnt really have a choice.....99% of its use is for text messaging for me...and emails

oh ps the stock battery is garbage. i need ot order the extended battery asap!
