IF thats the case, why dont you buy your friends $600 one, and drive it and see if you like it, then you could either: keep it and put the body parts needed on ( keeping your eye out for the used parts if thats the route you want to go ), OR if you like the car, and your finances are better in the future- get another RX-7.

So long as the oil gets changed and you DO NOT overheat the engine it should be fine. Overheating is bad news for the rotary, it can cause oil leaks that cannot be fixed short of tearing down the whole motor. (AKA the dreaded dowel pin leak. Of course my old 79 had em, I just got used to cleaning up oil off the motor)
As far as the oil in the water on the 240 find out what the problem is. It could be a pretty simple fix or it could be a rebuild.
As far as hearing good about the 7, hang around here. Of course we can be a weeeee bit biased at times
As for what I'd do in your shoes that's hard to say. Do you like your 240 and want to keep it and run it? Then do it, figure that the "devil you know" is better then the one you don't. IE you know the 240 you know what problems it has, it's quirks etc. If you like the look of the 7 and it's running good and you're willing to "break in" a new car I'd go for it. I'd personally go for it anyways, but then I have a tendancy to collect cars.
Geesh I think I've rambled on enough.
