What you want is your contact information, you want your name to really stand out. It should be clear concise, have absolutely no spelling, puncuation, grammar mistakes. There are different styles of resumes too, some are chronological, some are skill oriented, there are hundreds of website on the net with good resume writing tips. here is a copy of my is you want to base your resume on my. Mind you i still have no job, so it's not working. However i do have shitty GPA so that may have more to do with things. Good luck. you have to relize with the number of university graudates or people just looking for jobs far exceeds the number of jobs in the market. Most companies recieve 300 to 400 applications for 4 positions. Out of hte 4 positions, 2 are spoken for, (ie somone with connections will get hooked up or they worked there before). The people who are sifting through resumes does not want to start sticking in 400 cd roms into the computer to read each one, nor will they want to read 5 pages for 400 resumes. That is 2000 pages of text to read, and just flipping through 2000 pages will take you a while. |
Is there a specific field your applying for? Your resume should be tailored to each position you apply for, and should not exceed 2 pages unless the job dictates that.

I keep mine to one page. As I update it I drop off the less important things that were once "filler". Once I had more than 10 years working in a field I might bump it up to two pages.
My dad's resume' was only 2 pages. And at that point in his life (~50 yrs old) he had two degrees, owned his own real estate business, and had over 30 years working experience. |
I'm partial to a one page resume, with a cover letter tailored to the position you're applying for.
So that you have the opportunity to list all of your best qualifications, and experience. As well as a personal introduction, a genuine interest in the job. . .giving the employer a reason to read on. |

The more technical the job you are applying for allows for a longer resume I think. Shoot for one page, but if you really aren't getting all the IMPORTANT facts then it's ok to go over. I think a lot of people worry too much about the resume. Make it original, factual and without errors and you'll get interviews. Also, use textured paper or monogrammed paper...anything to be a little different and make your resume stand out from the hundreds of others. Also, check in the yellow pages or on the web for local career centers. You should be able to find somewhere to go and have someone rework your res for free.
