I saw a convertable first gen here in Syracuse last summer...I wish I had taken a picture of it...it was very clean and looked like it came that way from the factory.

Well, yes...that could be true. In 1979 there WAS a convertible 1st gen, but I'm not sure if it was Mazda made or some other company did it as a prototype kit...I've seen a few of 'em on Ebay before too...that pic does look photoshopped though...you'll have to look around. Most likely in Japan they had convertible 1st gens, they had turbo convertibles in 2nd gens over there too...Japan gets all the cool stuff

You can get anything made into a convertible, in the 80's it was a fad to convert cars into them, thats how the original z-28 was first done, it wasnt a factory job ( even when you could buy one from a GM dealer- it was a ASC ( American Sunroof Company) conversion and not GM, Mercedes 500SLC was another popular one ( thats the big 2 door ), look at the Volkswagon from Austin Powers- another kit car, I even seen a PT Cruiser convertible. Unless alot of work goes into them, they usually drive like a wet noodle.

Well I have seen a couple of them driving around here in Wa. there was one up by my house, and on the freeway a couple of times. I thought they were a rare factory model, but I was just guessing.

They are for real I went and looked at one locally here in Seattle about a year ago. Some place in California made a conversion kit for the first gen although I don't know if they still do. Looked pretty nice, the one I looked at had a hard top and a softop. Don't imagine they are real easy too come by, but they are out there.

Its in fact a real car. Not photoshopped. The owner used to be a Mazda dealership manager who set up a shop to do the conversions...Pacific Avatar. They added a steel brace under the body to reinforce lost structural rigidity .
