Really Old Pic!
Silver Ninety Three and UniqueTII are exactly right. Let me add my $.02
I like the full meal replacements instead of protein shakes. Balanced meal in one pack. Amazing how after you get working out for a while you can actually FEEL your muscles being re-energized while drinking one of these. Anyone else found this?
When you start working out, keep a little notepad with you. Before you work out, note the weights you will use and the reps / sets. Check them off as you complete them. This way, next week you can see what you did last time and see if you barely completed it or if it was easy. If it was easy, move to a higher weight. If you struggled a lot or didn't quite finish what you wanted to do, use that weight again. It ensures you make progress workout after workout.
Do cardio first thing in the morning before breakfast. Since your energy reserves are low because you haven't eaten for 12 hours, your body will be forced to use stored fat as an energy source. I found the commercial fat burning stuff like Ripped Fuel and Hydroxycut made me feel sick and want to puke if I took them before a workout. If you want to use something like that, use 200 mg caffiene, 25 mg ephedrine and an aspirin. Please beware, if you have a heart condition, this is not for you. This is like drinking maybe 1.5 pots of coffee in 5 minutes, your hands might shake and you will be WIRED.
I took more than a year off working out, and ate horribly. I think I lost 15 lbs of muscle and replaced it with 15 lbs of fat. I moved at the start of the year and took the opportunity to get back into my old routine of working out. While I am not as disciplined as I was before; no cardio, missed a lot of leg workouts and marginal diet, my strength is nearly back where it was and my chest and arms are noticeably bigger than they were at Christmas. My pants fit much better too, even though I haven't lost a pound.
