A normal car glass shop here did one for a resto. Wasn't cheap, (AUD $440)as it was cut out of something else bigger with a similar curvature but still....

Isn't $440 cheap for a windshield? Especially an antique?
Mazda wants $500 for an R1 lip, I can't imagine what they want for a windshield.

Not really. I get the impression there are a lot more old cars on the road here than in the States?
Garden variety cars cost $150-300 for front glass. My 82 Cosmo was too-fiddy with tint in the glass that was impossible to tell from the factory one.
You get a screen made by the local supplier of glass to Ford & Holden etc. Still lami, tinted like OEM, but not a genn-ew-ine part
