i've been doing some on-line searchin for some nice rims, but came across 'race wheels' that are not street legal (so says the site)

i dont see much difference and cant figure out why a set of wheels wouldnt be street legal. bah, i kno its a trivial question, and i kno someone is gonna have a really simple answer, but i just want to kno =D

oh another thing: front wheel drive wheels? i came across wheels that are for "FWD". again, wut is the difference?

rxpower 02-11-2003 07:06 PM

I'm asuming those would only go on 2 of your

wheels for the fwd https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

Why would wheels be not street legal though?

Mabe there too light.

How much do they weigh?

foopy 02-11-2003 07:10 PM

the FWD wheels are a set of 4. all identical. thas why i cant imagine why it'd only be for FWD.

and upon closer inspection, the non-legal ones, are probably illegal cuz they come in weird sizes: 15x3.5

16x16, 17x2.5 to list a few odd sizes.

Srce 02-11-2003 07:11 PM

Weight matters. If you to go TireRack or anywhere else, they'll sak for your Make and Model for a reason. What page did you see these "Race Wheels"?

foopy 02-11-2003 07:13 PM

www.centerlineforce.com

got the link from a magazine. rated the 'Impulse' very highly, but i looked at them, and it says: FWD ONLY.

I ISH CONFOOSED https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/blackeye.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

LOL, DUH, you try and fit a 16x16 wheel under the fender and I'll pay for it. So just think, a wheel with a 3.5" width has no chance of keeping you on the road. There is a certain amount of thread that has to touch the ground. Those wheels are obviously for funny cars and top fuel drag racers, etc.

yea i figured that one out

still wondering why some wheels would be FWD. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

Let me try this again, and ask all the questions you need, it's OK. Ever watch funny cars, John Force and the Jeg's Crew, their cars don't use much of the front wheels. The front's would usually be 17x3.5" and the rears about 16x16", get it?

Srce 02-11-2003 07:22 PM

Rob, a little help please. LOL :bigok:

Rob x-7 02-11-2003 07:23 PM

FWD rims have a different offset then RWD rims, RX-7s take whats considered to be FWD rim offsets, so if you see a rim you like that says FWD you are in luck because RWD rims wont fit on a RX-7

FWD rims are not rims that are skinny that go up front.

Because you were scoping the thread for at least the same time I was. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Rob x-7 02-11-2003 07:26 PM

to futher answer your question- 16" width rims and 3.5" width rims are not street legal. Those are drag racing rims and do not carry DOT certification.

foopy 02-11-2003 07:27 PM

aite aite. i've confoosed you gentlemen too.

the street illegal mystery was solved, when i took a closer look at tire sizes.

HOWEVER, there are a set of perfectly normal 17x7 wheels, recommended by sports compact car magazine, that i looked into. THOSE say FWD only. its a regular set of 4 wheels all 17x7, but for some reason say: only for FWD.

http://www.centerlinewheels.com/w_catalog/...g/features.html

the very last set of wheels 'impulse'

the site doesnt say the size (?) but my magazine says they are 17x7

so why would those normal 17x7 wheels be FWD only?

btw, thanks for your replies. its a learning process =D

foopy 02-11-2003 07:28 PM

nvm mind prev post, question was answered by rob while i was typing.

so i should look for FWD wheels?

Srce 02-11-2003 07:29 PM

What car would these go on. If it's an FD I'd use wider rims.

Srce 02-11-2003 07:30 PM

What the hell is a foopy anyway? :bigok: Yeah you should look for FWD wheels I guess.

yes, lucky for us the offset is VERY common so there is alot of choices of

rims. Thats why its hard to find a deep dish rim on a RX-7, main reason

I choose my rims is because they have a full 2" lip but they are FWD rims.

Srce 02-11-2003 07:34 PM

I'll never go for a wheel without an at least 2 inch lip.

foopy 02-11-2003 07:36 PM

'90 n/a

i like those cuz they are very light, but still solid. 11.3lbs for the 17's

foopy 02-11-2003 07:38 PM

lip? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif i hate being a newb.... I LEARN FAST THOUGH!

Rob x-7 02-11-2003 07:52 PM

a lip

SpecialT 02-11-2003 07:58 PM

The FWD thing is just offset,

The Streetlegal thing is because they are likely missing a few letters stamped on the

inside that clear them as being tested to a certain safety standard.

Nothing horrible.

Rob x-7 02-11-2003 07:58 PM

most FWD rims have no lip, like this:

foopy 02-11-2003 08:08 PM

ahhh...lip is good/bad for wut reasons? for a s5 which is best?

Srce 02-11-2003 10:08 PM

Lip looks better. Large width rear wheels usually have lips.

treceb 02-12-2003 12:31 PM

haha, thats funny. maybe next time ill look at gen d before asking questions. those centerlines are exactly the reason why i asked about FWD wheels. cool

these are th ones i liked.
