Purty Car :)
#18
Well here's some inside info. Last time I was in NJ at the Mercedes USA headquarters for training I asked about this thing.
The entire body is carbon fiber. What happens when some *** bumps into it in the parking lot and ***** up a body panel? According to
MBUSA(mercedes of america) as of right now the car will be sent back to McLaren in England for body repairs becuase there are no body shops in this country equipped to repair the CF properly.
The engine will be the same supercharged V8 found in all the new AMG V8 cars. Power output will only be approx 50 more for a total of 550hp. Fast yes, but not crazy fast.
And apparently they are having some development problems with some of the electronic systems, and quality control problems with the body work. It was supposed to be released in mid-2003 but they have pushed it back to sometime in 2004.
Price will be in the $250-325K range not $400K.
And the biggest disappointment of all. Mercedes has developed a new car to compete with the Porsche Carrera GT, the CL65. Its basically a CL600 (v12 twin-turbo 500hp, 600ft lbs torque) bored out to 6.5 liters and with more boost. Power output is supposed to be in the neighborhood of 600hp and 750 ft lbs. All that for only about $180K. So in my opinion the SLR is hardly worth the extra $100K.
