Somebody told me that the way they get the thing to fly upside down is the blades actually reverse direction, and that the transmission that performs that needs to be rebuilt after every flight from the constant slamming from forward to reverse. Any truth?

the blade's collective pitch inverts, not the rotorhead's direction, the assembly weights about 5lbs, you cant make it change dicection that quickly!
