Man denies raping toddler

Suspect says spider bites caused scarring

Jack Wiley denies the accusations against him.

EVERGREEN, Alabama (CNN) -- A man charged with raping a 3-year-old girl who has been living with him and a woman who may be her mother blamed spider bites Sunday for the child's genital scarring.

Jack Wiley, 58, and Glenna Faye Marshall, 40, were arrested in southern Alabama last week and charged with abusing the toddler and a 17-year-old boy. Police said Wiley is charged with sodomizing the teenager.

Wiley, dressed in an orange prison uniform, told CNN the boy also has had recent spider bites, and both children have suffered from boils.

Marshall told investigators she is the girl's mother, and has admitted there was sexual contact between Wiley and the child, according to Conecuh County District Attorney Tommy Chapman.

But Wiley insists the scarring is the result of something else.

"I believe it has something to do with spider bites, because for quite a while she would put her hands here [genitals] and hold her breath until she turned red, I mean almost as red as that truck," Wiley told CNN in an interview.

"I would give the world if I could get two really good doctors to examine her. I mean, I am worse than Charles Manson right now as far as the country is concerned," he said, referring to the convicted killer accused of ordering the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate and several others.

"I'm guilty of a lot of crimes. I don't care what they send me to prison for, but not hurting my kid. I love her," Wiley said.

Sheriff Tracy Hawsey said the couple have traveled throughout the United States on the NASCAR circuit and may have abused other children. Marshall has admitted that she and Wiley sexually abused a 12-year-old boy in Kentucky but couldn't be specific, Hawsey told CNN.

Authorities so far have only been able to link Wiley to a 1975 case of attempted arson in San Diego, according to the sheriff, who said Wiley has used as many as eight aliases and several Social Security numbers.

Deputies have taken statements from the 3-year-old and the 17-year-old, as well as Marshall. They are awaiting the results of DNA tests to determine how, or if, the three are related.

The child and teenager are living under protective custody with a foster family. The couple is being held at the Conecuh County Detention Center, where Wiley has been separated from other prisoners for his protection.

The arrests came about through the efforts of a Decatur, Georgia, woman, Tracie Dean. Dean saw the girl, accompanied by an older man, in a gas station south of Evergreen in rural Alabama and sensed something was wrong.

After leaving, she called 911. Authorities initially told her that everything checked out and the girl was the man's granddaughter. But police later told her the older man gave them what they felt was a false name, and that he was a wanted sex offender. Dean said she would be interested in adopting the girl.

Deputies arrested Wiley and Marshall on Friday at a mobile home south of Evergreen. Hawsey said the teen gave confusing accounts of his relationship with Marshall.

The couple have been together 17 years. Driving a beat-up Chevrolet Suburban, they have made a living selling beaded key chains with the numbers of NASCAR drivers at racetracks, fast-food parking lots and truck stops.

Conecuh County resident Bill Fryant, who was letting the couple live in a mobile home he owned, said their recent tenure was the second time they had come to him, claiming to be homeless and penniless after major hurricanes.

"They were gone for a year and then they came back. I never thought I'd see them again after they left the first time," Fryant said. "Then they came back and said, 'Well, we need a place to stay for a little while. Do you mind if we stay here?'"

"I was just too nice to say no," Fryant said. According to him, the couple was planning to leave soon on another NASCAR circuit tour.

Talking about his relationship with the little girl, Wiley told CNN, "If you look at all my NASCAR pictures, been to 58 races. All you see is us together. If she was here right now, she would dive into my arms."

I'm sure they're very nice people.... Well, other than the toddler-raping thing.
