This one must me slightly newer, now that I'm at home here's a better pic of the drivers side there isn't a cap there behind the door.
Nevermind my post, I saw the one on the front on the other pics that folks have posted.

Since when have they been legalized? I'm pretty sure they will never be legalized...only 4 were imported to be sold in the United States, and if you're up on your knowledge of legalizing a car from overseas, the government requires 4 cars to be put through various tests in order for it to be legal to drive in the US.

They have been for a while now, I'm not going to say last names, but Larry got one imported a while back and then when it was legal to drive he got plates for it. Then since he had 2, the other in germany, of them he sold one to Page which is that white one. These guys are both in Oregon. He coudln't have gotten plates for it if it wasn't legal. I also saw that the 959 was now street legal a few years back in magazines. I think there are more than 4 in the US, but only 4 that you know of. They did make 329 I believe. And I'm sure more than 4 of those made their way here some how or another.

You are correct! Apparently a new law passed in 1999 made them legal:

During the model's development, Porsche refused to provide the United States Department of Transportation with the four 959s they required for crash testing, and the car was never certified by the NHTSA for street use in the U.S. With the passage of "Show and Display" the crash test requirements were removed and importation of the 959 was allowed, assuming the car could meet with the local emissions standards that would have existed as of 1987. The 959 can be fitted with a catalytic converter and a rechipped computer which will allow it to meet those emissions requirements. However most owners refuse to modify their 959s, and the cars remain as collection pieces.

I guess your buddy eluded the US Customs and got some past them.
He did what Bill Gates and all his money could not do, up until a few years ago that is.
As far as I have always known- there was only one in the states prior to a few being legalized a few years back, a dealer brought it in for track and show use only- maybe he drove it around with a dealer plate, but it could not be registered- legally that is. The story goes he had removed all the creature comforts to make it a track car, im sure he could have put it all back.
