NEW YORK (CNN) -- Police evacuated a 21-story apartment building in Harlem on Saturday after discovering that its tenants included a 2-year-old, 300-pound tiger.

The discovery was made after a tenant in the building -- apparently the owner of the big cat -- showed up at a hospital Friday night after having been mauled, police said.

Police were planning to lower themselves by rope from an upper floor to the man's fourth-floor apartment, where the tiger was seated by the window and in apparent good health, said Larry Wallach, a tiger specialist from Suffolk County who peeked into the apartment.

Wallach said police will use a dart to tranquilize the animal, then place it into a cage provided by the Bronx Zoo and lower it out the window onto the street below. From there, the animal will be taken to Wallach's house. He is licensed to care for tigers and is housing several, he said.

Residents of the apartment building, the Drew Hamilton Houses, said they had not seen the tiger before, and police said they suspected the man had kept the tiger in his apartment since it was a cub.
