no those springs do have some outer pushing to them, a paper clip would more or less just hold them there.
the clips do actually do a good job too, they help push the pads off the rotors when not on the brakes helps extend brake life, cool the rotors, less noise, less chance of glazing the new pads to the rotors etc etc.

You said you don't have "fresh" springs, so that implies you still have the old ones, right? Just reuse them, the pads will be fine.

I agree. I surely didn't mean to conflict. Surely I'd rather have springs than no springs, but I don't think it would be a "fatal error" if you didn't run any at all.
Run the old springs and don't give it another thought.
