So, i tohught sinful7 did paint and body work, i was wrong when i pm'd him haha.

Anyway, ive got a chance to go to an automotive vocational school in houston.

i really want to learn to do collision repair and paint, my questions, how hard is it to break into the buisness and what is general pay like?

Ive had no experience with it at all, from what ive heard it takes a lot of time and patience, 2 things of which i have plenty of.

its easy to get in and the pay isnt so hot.

fcrotornut 03-02-2005 06:42 PM

just the paint itself, or the collision repair?

they also offer some nice autmotive courses about tuning and modifying.

there are classes you can take but the grunt work is done by low $$ guys

Easy to get a job, you can just apply as a porter and most places will teach you anything you show an interest in learning. Most body guys do not make a ton of money though. If you get good you can make money just like anything else in life but just being an average body guy at your average paint/ collision repair shop I would be surprised if you made over 50k a year at best.

banzaitoyota 03-02-2005 06:50 PM

please tell us you are not going to spend 28K at UTI or Wyotech to get a 40K/year job

seriously, just go apply. They will show you the basics. You can take it from there.

im being serious about this, this is a feild i want to get into and do for a living.

but if i dont have to go get a 28k grant for schooling to get certified, then i woudl rather go that route.

fcrotornut 03-02-2005 07:57 PM

anybody?

no?

To get into it you really dont need the school and while it would help you get in and make more money when you first start working its not needed. All you really have to do is go in and start at the bottom as "bitch boy" and then learn and move up as your skills improve. You can do this being a mechanic or anything else. Just go in talk to them and they will start you off.

fcrotornut 03-02-2005 08:29 PM

after having a good talk with rob, it seems like i would be much better of starting at a shop sweeping, sanding, taping off and washing cars compared to moving to houston and paying alot for school.

banzaitoyota 03-02-2005 08:51 PM

thats what we have been telling you ALL NIGHT!

Rob x-7 03-02-2005 08:55 PM

for the record, I dont work in autobody

autobody labor rate-$35-$45 a hour

marine fiberglass rate-$125 a hour

you can do the math and see why the marine business is much more profitable for the owner of a shop and those working in one
