I am looking into doing a rebuild myself. Just waiting on some video's to help me figure out if I think my skills are up to par to do so myself. I have rebuilt everything from lawn mower engines to v8's. But have to do some more research on the rotary to see if I feel comfortable. Would have the porting done by a near by rotary mech and also have them make sure the that everything was within spec for a rebuild.
i can build a rotary, and i can't even pack wheel bearings.

The other thing to remember is the price doesnt include rotor housings.....you will need new rotor housings and that adds another $1000 or so to the price.
When ever you get pricing you need to ask them how much extra it will be if you need rotor housings. Some places include the housings in thier pricing cause they always use new housing with every rebuild. Thats why thier price is a little more. In reality its not a little more cause your $2300 rebuild is going to end up being at least $3300 by the time you add in 2 housings.

Not always. I broker rebuilds, many with new side housings, starting at $1,375.00 USD

The rebuild is done by RX-7 Specialties, who has been doing so for years. Because ReXes are pretty much all they do they get qty. prices. A shop in town quoted me $450-$600 CDN to hang my RB exhaust - RX-7 Specialties does the same job for $125 CDN.
If you're a dealer and order 1 part, you pay cost. If you order 50, you get a discount. If you're not a dealer and order 50, you get the same discount (we used to get jobber rates, 60% off cost, when buying GM parts for military vehicles for the old CUCVs, Chevy truck based vehicles)
If you add up the individual parts cost of, say, a Jeep Grand Cherokee you'll get a total of somewhere around $100,000. Yet dealers sell them for far less. It comes down to economies of scale.
In any event, if you're interested in checking it out pop by http://www.wigglepup.com/RX-7/ and click on "Rebuilt Rotaries"
