Hey listen, read slowly because it seems you're all missing the point:
If the rotary in his Rx8 purrs like it should as a brand new car, and he has no reason to look under the hood, It may as well be a piston engine. Because all he's doing is changing the oil and filling it up and driving it. Same as any honda.
Sure, my experience is the same with my FD, SO FAR, but given its older than the rx8, i think its safe to say I'll be seeing problems that will challenge my wrenchability sooner than he will...Make sense,...sure it does...that's all i am saying.
So here it is: I don't see how owning an Rx8 can "prepare" him for owning an FD as per owning a rotary, since it won't require his attention. It COULD prepare him to how a rotary feels, i guess, but being its NA but the FD is TT, it changes how you have to feather it in turns, changes the whole scheme of things!
The only way its comparable is handling aspects as far as being a well balanced, low torque, RWD car.
It really isn't rocket science guys....I don't think the FD is God, and I sure as hell can't be told I hate the rx8, BECAUSE I MIGHT BUY ONE.

I was simply making an innocent point that buying an Rx8 for the purpose of prepping yourself towards owning an OLDER version of the same motor (per se...) that is turbocharged and is bound to have more problems on a mechanical aspect is just off...
My plastic comment was just noting that, like most new cars, the companies keep putting big plastic covers over their engines and such, kinda funny it supports leaving it alone in some sense...
It was meant to be advice. Nothing more, nothing less.

You missed the jist of what I was saying. your whole attitude towards everybody on here is "i'm better then you."
Mabye you dont realize it when you post. You are the first to point out a flaw in what somebody says, and you act like you are some powerful force of knowedge in the rotary world. Everything i read that you type screams "forum education."

And you must have a pre-conception that me giving advice, while negative to his proposal, is somehow wrong. My point was very VERY easy to understand, and should not have read as it did.
Do I have to shower my messages with smileys and junk to show that I'm not putting on a 'tude when I say "Hey pal, I don't think that'll work!"
I didn't post a flaw in what he said, just an idea that buying a NEW car in preparation for an OLD car's maintenance work will not make anyone knowledgable, even my elitist self! That's all I was kinda of trying to make sense noting...
I never once perceived that I am some powerful force. I have yet to tell someone what to do. The only thing I put down or say "thats ghey" to is body kits and 19" fugly rims, and its usually not even the users car so I just state my opinion as such.
Sorry that it's true you read it that way, but ask anyone here who has met me or had a conversation with me. I'm a perfectionist in most things but i do NOT put people down nor have I ever said anything to Rx8 or anyone without it being either A. An opposite opinion, which is innocent or B. Advice, which may differ from their intent, but it is my advice with only the best, most sincere, suggestions.

My position stands: I RX8 I: I was just stating my advice bro, sorry it turned into something else. Buying a $24k+ new car in preparation for an old $13k car is an odd investment to me, and I was just sayin that until you are challenged in that way with your new Rx8 (which, if Mazda did anything right, shouldn't be anytime soon), you aren't getting much prep for what the FD could very well have in store for you...
And I say this even though I COULD be ignorant and just sit back and say that FD's are trouble free because mine's been a breeze...but I won't, and can't.

Whew. Now it's time to re-read one of my posts. I didn't say that I was going to be mechanically inclined after just driving the damn thing! I just wanted to get a feel for how a rotary feels when I push on the gas. I want(ed) to know if rotaries were my niche. I wanted to know that I could deal with almost no low-end torque with the proper driving style. I didn't say that by driving it, it meant that I was going to be able to tear down a rotary and build it back with 0 issues. It was my introduction to the rotary world, not a mechanic's degree. Edit: And yes, Phoenix, I know you're a friendly guy and were just offering advice. I just don't think you were fully seeing the point I was trying to make. You assumed that I thought it would be the ultimate in preparation, and hopefully now you know that's not how I feel. My friend Daniel has a 1st-Gen that both of us will be tearing down, engine and all, to learn the mechanic aspect of the whole deal. Now can we all please stop arguing about it?
