I have a Nikon D100. It is an expensive digital camera. It is a very nice digital SLR. Shoots up to 6.1 megapixels. I mainly use it to take intra-oral photos in my dental practice. It takes as good or better pics than any conventional SLR I have seen. It can be fully automatic, fully manual or anywhere in between. I can control f-stop, shutter speed, etc.... What I love about it is no more film but I still get film quality prints with a photo quality printer. If I **** up a shot, I just shoot it again and delete the fucked up shot. Very convenient. Someone blinks when the flash goes off...you haven't wasted a shot, you just shoot again.



The photos are of the highest quality and print out like a photo taken with a regular camera.



My setup cost close to $4000.00. The body alone is $1300-$1700 depending on where you look. I would stack it next to any regular SLR any day.



I have a friend who is a professional photographer. He shoots for catalogs (his favorite shoot being for Victoria's Secret). They still use a lot of conventional stuff but they have 2 digital cameras that are over 30 Megapixels each. The size of the photos taken are anywhere from 120MB to 640MB each. Fill up a lot of space quickly. He said those cost something like $25,000 each.

I'm really just dorking around. I got it for christmas and figured I'd put it to use. I'm going to a car show this weekend and wanted to know how to control some stuff so I could get some cool pics.



eventually I will ditch this camera, or just set it on a shelf. I am gonna upgrade, but for now, it works fine. all my cash is going into the 7.

Are you going to be using a tripod? How slow are you wanting to go? The slower speed film and longer shutter speed is good for indoor, low light photography but remember if you slow it down too much and have too low of light, you either have to use a tripod and/or supplement with flash. Without the flash you may end up with a very poorly lit subject and colors not right and without the tripod you may end up with a blurry subject.



Your best bet is to maybe let the camera do the work for you unless you have time to blow a roll for practicing in different lighting, with different speeds and f-stops. Get a notepad and document what each setting was on each photo and also bracket your photos when you practice. Meaning....take one with a certain speed then go one speed lower and one speed higher, same with f-stops.



Your camera should have a light meter built in to it that will help you choose your settings.



Shoot a roll or two for practice and get it developed and check your photos. Compare with the settings you wrote down and find what works best in what situation for your specific camera. Then you know what to use in any given situation.

For the shots I've done, I didn't change the shutter speed at all.



I simply set my aperture to 1.8 and the shots were golden.



I believe changing the shutter speed is more for objects in motion rather than those sitting still.



Digital SLR pictures still look "flat" to me. There's something missing from them.

I have 2 tripods. different sizes. and you do have to leave the shutter open longer for still shots also, but that is if you are using lower speed film. 50-100 is the best. but needs slow shutter



damn my all automatic camera.



I'm still gonna haul it down to the car show in a few minutes. I need a scanner, there were some very nice cars down there last time........

the thing about slr is the developing cost. unless u have a place that does it dirt cheap costs can get silly. and a lot of the higher end digital's have an SLR type setup.

If you develop your film yourself, it is always a plus. You can experiment in so many ways in the processing stages. You can have 100 speed film, and "push" the film to a 1600 speed film processing.



And in the printing stages you can mess with so many things it is mind boggling. Over like a million different combinations you can do.



Manual photography is so much more fun than having some ***** *** Sony 5 megapixel camera that does it all for you. Granted, it is easier if you want a quick and easy painless shot.
