I saw a show once on Discovery or TLC, where they said the military was researching a pill that kept soldiers from getting tired (read: don't need sleep). They showed time-elapsed video of several soldiers, some who took the pill and some who didn't. They had them do mundane tasks on a computer, in a room with no way to tell time. Evidently the pill worked, but I'm sure there are side effects. (body heals better in sleep, kidneys function more efficiently, and...other stuff)

Yeah, the body can only function for so long without sleep, until we invent a way for healing to occur while awake.

I thought I heard something similar. Like a drug company was coming up with a pill that changed the amount of time necessary for your brain to rest. This thing was supposed to allow you to keep going for like 6 days, and only need 8 hours of sleep one day a week. Supposedly it's not supposed to have any negative side effects as long as you rest your body for a few hours every day (which isn't a problem for most people)

It would be cool, everybody would probably work 2 jobs just so they didn't get bored.

I'd like to use something like that only on occasion, but not all the time. Sleep seems to be one of those things that we will never know everything about, so I'd be scared of the long-term effects, despite what studies show.

Yeah, those pills sound like something that would work once in a while, but maybe I'm just a skeptic.

When I had read the article, the problem they had was a lack of long term studies. The FDA won't approve anything like this until studies are done, and I'm pretty sure they haven't even finalized the drug, so I guess we have to just wait and see.
