...well, compared to the other camera I had been using. It's the Kodak DX4530 (link). I like the 5 mega pixels, and the video capabilities.

For you guys who actually know about this stuff, what's your opinion on that camera?

hehe, sorry, no pics with me at work, and no internet at home. I'm going to have to go buy some cd's, just for transferring pics from home to work.

It looks like it will make a good point and shoot camera.

We wanted more features, and didn't need that much resolution, so we got the Minolta DiMAGE Z1.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need 5MP? Do you plan on making 20"x30" prints?

I'm sorry, you must've mistook me for someone who knows what the **** he's talking about.

I figure better resolution will make the smaller pics even clearer, but what do I know? (answer: not much about digi cams)

plus my wife bought it, I just said "sure, looks good to me!" we shopped on the basis of the cameras owned by people we know, like "hey, this is better than chris's camera, and chris's camera is mediocre..."

LOL, I like your attitude. Actually shrinking down big pics is the same as taking them at a lower resolution to begin with (AFAIK), so you're not really making the most of the 5MP.

The Minolta has a 10x optical zoom. Which has worked out really well. Digital zoom is not that great, it just amounts to zooming in and cropping the existing image... so your resolution goes down when you use it. We turned the digital zoom off on our camera.

If you are happy with it then great! I mean, if it's better than Chris's camera then it must be alright!.... Who's Chris BTW?

Playing around with it, I noticed that the digital zoom pretty much sucks ***. The 3x zoom is nice, but after that, it gets real pixalated (is that a word?), blocky.

Chris is my older, more technologically-savvy brother.

Yup, you might as well turn that crap off. With 5MP though it should still show up pretty good when you get it onto the computer.

I just looked up your camera (The DiMage Z1) and the 10x OPTICAL sounds great! However, it says it simply uses 4 AA Batteries...is there a rechargable pack option? Or a hub/dock that it can recharge on?

I am going to get a DigiCam for my birthday hoping to spend under/at $300 for something good.

As you and others have admitted: Digital Zoom sux. It's basically useless.
