I've never been partial to amd or intel to be honest, i've had a good mix of both, i recently purchased two setups with the amd 64 bit procs. My laptop has the new turion proc and the thing rocks, very fast and with the power monitor feature when browsing the net and wut not the thing runs at like .9 volts, after purchasing that i decided to buy a mobile sempron setup for amys desktop, just slapped the system together tonight and I am very impressed again, i''ve got to say that cost would no longer be a deciding factor in the purchase of the amd procs, i would prefer the amd over the intel at wutever cost.

Now i just need a 64 bit windowss lol, anyone tried pro 64?

How much RAM do you have in each machine?

I really wouldn't run XP Pro unless you use native 64-bit apps. There's really no need in doing so.

Linux/BSD (which includes OSX) has way more to offer via 64bit chips than Windows, currently.

Chip makers are putting their best designs into 64bit chips now, so it's almost a no-brainer to buy one, even if you aren't running native 64bit apps.

I am running an Athlon 64 3800 and it rocks. Upgrading to a X2 4800 now. Gotta get a dual core system going. I have 2 gigs in my current system and my new one will have 4 gigs.

The 64bit version of XP is very unstable. You will run the 32bit faster.

I have XP 64 somewhere if you want me to send you a copy. I also have Longhorn (Vista) somewhere (way more stable than XP 64, but its not fully functional). Vista is suppose to be out in November, so just wait for that.

Not much software has been produced for 64bit windows apps, so you will not see the processors real capability until then, but compared to a 2.4Ghz 32 bit processor, the 64 does run faster, uses less power, and runs cooler. I run liquid cooling in my case and I may see spikes of 26C when I have Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Oracle, ColdFusion, and everything else running.

The biggest improvement I have seen with my processor is RAM. The 64s technically max out a 8 gigs, but the only socket 939 boards you can find max out at 4 gigs, which is still a decent amount.

I lost track of Longhorn a while ago.

Glad to see another person ditching Intel. I have never had a problem with AMDs. I still have an old K6-2 system that will still boot up and run great(go 333 with 128 megs of ram). Try doing that with an older P3.

i'm running xp pro 64. Not one of the many unstable free betas that are floating around, but the full release version. Stability is fine, performance is even better than the betas - and those well outperformed the same system on 32bit os. 32-bit app support is robust, i haven't had any problems - and i run lots of high end rendering/video/audio applications. The 32 bit versions run faster on the 64bit os than they do on the 32.

The only complaint i have is driver related. There are still a lot of pieces of hardware that just don't have 64bit drivers - and that's the one place where you can't just use the 32bit version. Sound, video, and generic stuff (mice, keyboards, usb drives) are supported fine. I'm luck in that i've got printers that have available drivers - many still don't. My compact flash to usb adapter for my camera doens't have drivers available, which is irritating. My scanner doesn't have drivers - though i've found generic that i can use i miss the features i had with device specific drivers.

All and all - i love it. the speed increases in render processing times in my video work is worth a little hassle - which gets less all the time.

How are the heat levels with these? My XP 2500+ system is way too noisy, big fan needed.

I have a turion in my laptop which is also a mobile, after reading various forums i found out the turion runs cooler then anything out there, my old intel mobile had two fans going nonstop, my new turion has one fan and as i type this it isn't even running!!!
