My father passed away last sunday, i found him when i came in from work. Ive been thrown into a bit of a **** storm trying to handle all his old debts and things right now. One thing bothering me though is the vert was never switched from his name, i wasnt driving it so never felt the need to do so... I found out he owes 200,000 in back taxes. I called and they tell me theyll just take whatever he had. So do I have any options on the car to ensure it wont be taken with everything else?

You will probably have to make the IRS a small offer to get the car back into your name, or they may just say keep it, you'll have to deal with them a bit as you really don't have any legal ground to stand on, the car is in his name and therefor an asset of the estate, not yours.

Sorry to hear about your dad, sounds like you've got your hands full.

if you have not driven it, and have not registered it you may want to sign the car over to someone ELSE, back date the sale as

far back as you can.

It can be said that the new owner just never registered it, and being it is a inexpensive used car sale its not like the transaction

would have went through your dad's bank account. Have someone else transfer the title ASAP though, it will take them months to finally settle the estate so you can probably even sign that over to someone else right now. Banks are not really interested in 1988 cars anyhow.

Sorry about your dad, not sure if there is a house involved in this or what its worth, but dont let any debt collectors scare you

into thinking YOU have to pay any of that back.

Ive yet to find the title to the car otherwise your option sounds really good rob. I've pretty much come to terms with the fact ill be losing the car. Theres no way i could get the cash to pay the irs for it unless they were to make it some outragousley small amount of money which seems unlikely for them.

Right now im having to worry about strange anomolies in the house(was in my mothers name so no issues there). the 1500.00 stove went out randomly along with other electrical things. The county is on my *** about the other property my father was purchasing(which i would like to keep) across the street for "abandoned vehicles", comercial vehicle, and "junk". So probably looking at some fines with that one now... Leaving for kentucky at 6am, and my dog has decided to stay underneath the house all the time now. Im 75% expecting to find her dead when i get home as well. When i found my father she was in the house with him(2 days) seems to have messed her up.

apply for a title now, it will take them a little while to catch up to you. Trust me they dont want a car that old.

You can even say it does not run, pretty easy to disable the car.

But it really sounds like you have much bigger things to worry about in life right now then that car.
