I reckon we might be seeing a big jump in linux users - people are going to be reluctant to pay hiked prices for vista, I assume it's going to be harder to crack too so people that would have done that are going to be down on options - all this right as linux takes big steps forward in functionality - ubuntu is really user friendly, secure, stable, efficient, comes with nearly all the office/photoshop/etc. programs you could need (the ones it doesn't are only a few clicks away) and they'll ship them out for free 10 copies at a time.

You have to realize MS is a VERY diversified corp at this point. They're doing better in the vid game market which was allegedly impossible to break into or even succeed in, in the past.
The jury is out on vista, i'm not convinved people will see the need to upgrade, however I'm not all that sure ms is banking as much on Vista as people think they are.
Microsoft is about marketing and about being the only game in town, there's one simple thing they still provide inexpensively that even Linux can't.... support. I could argue the benefits linux all day, but the reality is, for the home user Linux is more headache then dealing with windoze, if for no other reason then the fact there isn't the support they need to be able to call someone when they can't figure out why their digi cam wont work. Whether it be support from teh software manufacturer or the hardware vendor, at this point it's not there for the penguin.
Only time will tell that's for sure. Mega corps like ms and walmart use any tactic they can to **** on the little guy.

Not to mention they do cool stuff like when they found out apple didnt patent the lcd display on the ipods, so ms did instead. Look whos getting paid on some of that sweet ipod money ... then as a **** you, they make their own version of the ipod with the same lcd screen. lol
