That's what happens when you live in MN and don't put in enough antifreeze in the engine. Water takes out anything in it's way when it freezes. Happens a lot to boat engines here. People forget to get all the water out of the engine before it goes off to storage, spring comes and the enigne is ****.

I've had a similar side housings break over a very cold winter. This was on our drag race engine. The track does not allow us to use antifreeze coolant. I drained the water out of the engine, for winter, but the lower part of the engine block still had some water and cracked the center plate really bad. what happens is the water frezees and the ice expands and breaks the cast iron plate..
