Look at my tool!

It's a 17mm hex impact bit. Made in the good ol' USA. Ordered it from sears.com on Sunday. Got an email yesterday saying it shipped. So today I figure I'll check the UPS tracking and see when it'll get here. Status: delivered. Location: porch. I go look and what the hell do you know? It's right there! Yup. You can't beat service like that!

boo, make your own, thats what i did lol.
doin an axle on a VW?
kevin.
I should say not! It's an Audi!
Yup.
I was just going to get a 17mm hex key, but I wasn't sure how good the one Sears sold for 8.99 was and if it would stand a 4-foot piece of pipe. This thing is pretty beefy and it's 3/4" drive.
So, how did you make one?

kevins the master of fabrication ive seen this he welded a lugnut on a wheel stud or somthing like that it is pretty cool but he'll be abled to tell you exactly how he did it hes pretty innovative and not a bad welder at that

you can use a 17mm headed bolt and nuts...
Yes, I suppose.
I figure that with my lack of experience, I should at least give myself the advantage of the right tool for the job. I'm sure I'll find other aspects of the job that will cost me time and frustration. At least I've got the means to get that bolt out!
The nice thing about the high price of auto service is that it encourages me to learn to do jobs that I wouldn't otherwise consider doing myself.

see I had to come up with a solution mad quick so i started sticking lugnuts in there and figured out it was a 17mm head, so i knew the size.
so I was thinking and looking and i saw the VW lugnuts (which are 17mm head with the stud attached as a "stud nut" deal)
So it hit me, all i needed was a head on the other side one of the lugnuts. So i threaded two nuts on there, welded them together and welded them to the threaded shaft part. Ground down the weld so my 19mm impact socket could fit, and walah 17mm hex key.
Then i thought i was cool....until the next VW axle, and too my surprise it was a 14mm allen key i needed, not a 17mm. So i duplicated the 17mm one, then ground it down to a 14mm .
theyve worked tons of times too.
I also just use regular 6 point allen key sockets instead of buying the VW 12 point things..they fit and dont strip. for the 12 point nuts where you need a socket, it's just a regular 12 point socket so its no big deal.
I love telling people the price of the audi quattro axles (well some of them) new from the dealer theyre like $1300. rebuilt theyre like $100. people change their minds from "dealer only" to "rebuilt is fine" real quick.
