I've commented on this in another forum...the whole "Pope's goin on a feeding tube" thing. My thought is this:

If, according to Catholic belief, good, righteous people go to Heaven upon their death, and wicked sinners go to Hell upon their death.......

Why is the Pope so afraid to die?

he is not afraid to die. He is the spiritual leader of the catholic church. The highest person in the church. All his people are trying to keep him alive for that reason. Not because he is afraid, because he is needed and worshiped by millions of followers all across the world.

I can't understand what the big deal is. Ireland's main religion is Catholocism, and I swear people are going around like it's a member of their own family that's dying. Newsflash, he's just some old guy in Italy that youve never met you **** .

OK I don't want to start a battle, and I certainly am not Mr. religious. But being raised a roman catholic, and being a fellow polock, to our people this is more important and significant than anything else. Yeah we never met him, but it's not about him as a person persay. It's about what he symbolizes. To us it is like a member of out immediate family is going to die. You can lable me as a hypocrate because I rarely go to church, but I know I will be going when a mass is set up honoring his passing.

I'm not Catholic, but I do try to respect the religious traditions of others.

He's not, he asked to stay in his apartment rather then being rushed to the hospital and by all accounts he's resting comfortably and quite serene. Not the image of a man who is trying to fight off death with every possible means.
