I read a book a little while ago that said when some idiot jury pulls this stunt the city has to pay the full legal fees of the other attorneys.
If they had passed an innocent verdict it would cost the city nothing, this way costs them hundreds of thousands of dollars.
And some people complain when cops shoot somebody. Dead people can't sue, or lie on the witness stand.

It's their family that sues, the nypd is learning that one right now.

True, but in the above case, the 'victim' was the only one who said anything bad about the police. All the other witnesses said they did nothing wrong.
