Good thing you didn't have to cross any borders with the car.

Then his manner, of burlesque dropped from him. Who was to be stripped to the skinby that violent woman? Hanaud drew Jim into the wall ofthe house. From the top of the stairs Jim heard him asko you know Jean Cladel by sight? Yes, he is anxious to learn, thatyoung man. She stretched out a hand against thejamb of the door to steady herself. He may be very likely to come across that necklaceof Madame Harlowes. I have broken into a conversation like a clumsy fellow. Betty hesitated with some sharp rejoinder on the tip of her tongue. There is no charge against Cladel in this affair. Within the hall Jim and Monsieur Bex were talking veryseriously in a low voice. The alley led into a lane which ran parallel with the street of Gambetta. Hanaud lifted off the lid andturned back the tissue - paper. I, replied Hanaud, standing up on the tips of histoes. And he has somuch against him that he will want to be on our side if he can. Mademoiselle, I should like you to answer me a question. I, replied Hanaud, standing up on the tips of histoes. God knows what dreadful thing has happened here. At the end of the wall a door gave admission into the house. I dont want to show a light here yet with thatwindow open. He nodded his head in appreciation of the trick. But until this morning there was never any question of the arrow,Hanaud returned. The necklace is not in that room, said Monsieur Girardot in a voice offinality. But Hanaud was not in the mood to consider ifs and possibilities. A minute agothere were footsteps behind us. Could suspicion betray itself more brutally? Put it to lie carelessly under everyones nose and noone will see it at all. It seemed that there was a sentinel standing guard over us. But he is doing something which is quite important, Jim continued, swelling a little with pride. I cant help it, he said in a low voice to Jim. His jaw dropped; he stared at Hanaud inawe.

Was it all of Jim that swelled? Or just a part of him? And was it really pride? Or something altogether different?
