For those of you who don't know, I was planned to attempt a world record in freediving this year (next month). So I am treating myself to a huge friggin vacation...Me and my girlfriend are going to go somewhere....We don't know where to go...Don't want to go anywhere we've been already so scratch off the list the following.

We're both kinda watersportsy people...So a destinately with surfing, w.surfing, diving, and that sort of crap is a bonus...Snowboarding is cool too.

Belieze man. Great beautiful diving. They have a reef there(forget the name) that is up there with the Great Barrier Reef in terms of size and beauty. The entire country is also stupid cheap. You can get 5-star accomadations, food, and fun for pennies.

Good choice. San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Amergris Caye. Thats where you wanna go. Thats where all the diving, nice restraunts, hotels, clubs, etc. are.



About the only thing on the mainland are rainforest getaways, Mayan Ruins, stuff like that. If you wanna stay off the beaten tourist path stay on the mainland and rent a car. If you wanna do all the fun stuff hit up the aforementioned areas.

If it's just me diving then it's about 27-30k...if I dive with my female training partner www.yasemindalkilic.com we split the bill 50/50



Now, the next question you ask is....Why so much?



First thing is, we do the record attempts in Turkey. Main reason is because the team that we have worked with for the last 5 years lives on that side of the world. We are diving in the Med. so it's deep right off shore. Only a 10 min boat ride and you are in 500m of water. Visibility is great, no current, weather great, so it's just a plus to do the record there. Also, it's cheaper to fly to divers and a trainer to the location then to find a different location and fly a team of 12 - 15 people to that location.



Reason we use the same people is we know them and they have been trained in freedive rescue and are extremely reliable and professional....



So the breakdown of costs go something like this...(rounded up)



- Airline ticket for me and my trainer: 3k (approximately 1.6k each)

- Acommodations for 3 weeks 18 people: 30k with 70% discount for logistical sponsorship: 4k

- Boat rental for 3 weeks: 3k

- Mixed gasses for trimix divers (the deep safety): 2k

- Misc Airline tickets for flying divers from various parts of Europe to dive site: 3k

- Transportation: 1.5k

- Dive Equip Rental: 3k

- Salary for safety divers and video team: 6k

- Miscellaneous 2k.



Total: 26.5k



The miscellaneous fund usually incudes bringing in 2 freediving judges from the freediving organization which verifies the record as good (or bad) Diving FREE



The kicker is this. For me, I basically do it for no money....Just fun for me. If we manage to get some of the stuff on the list above as logistical sponsorship like the baot, gasses, dive equip, air tickets (maybe...airlines are cheap) Then I get to come home with a few k in my pocket.



So it's not exactly cheap. I managed to raise my portion of the money via sponsorship and many supporting frined...However, I was counting on diving with Yasemin and her covering half the expenses...Basically the way it's been for the last 5 years...Well, she can't seem to come up with the money this year....Basically what i'll end up doing is sitting on my sponsorship money until spring when i can go for it again.





Whoooo, that was long..



But back to the where to go thing. I have an uncle that visits Beliz quite a bit so I will hit him up for some info....Red Sea, Egypt is also a consideration.

Eilat, in Israel, would be very nice. Coral reefs etc.

im going to Tahiti next, Hawaii was nice, some parts nicer then others, Waikiki is a waste of time and disgusting in my opinion, I was only there for 1 full day to see Pearl Harbor then I high tailed it out of there to Kauai which was awesome, then to Maui which was seemed just right

The colder the water the more pronounced the "diving reflex" is.



Diving in the mediterranea can be good and bad. If you dive when the air temperature is cold then it actually works against you during the preparation for the dive. You end up getting very cold and shivering before a dive only causes you to use excess O2. However, if it's warmer air and cold water, it's better. The transition from the warm air to cold water stimulates the neves on around the face which heightens the diving reflex...While holding your breath in cold water it cause the pulse rate to drop considerably. The heart is a pretty sizeable organ that uses O2 so the less it works, the better it is for you. The preparation for the dive totally oxygenates the system so even with the pluse as low as 20-30bpm you can still survive a dive for few minutes while exerting quite a bit of energy.



A couple months ago I did an experiment for some extreme sports documentary where they basically submerged my face only in ice water....I was wearing a pulse monitor hooked to a computer, in less than 1 minutes and 30 seconds my pulse had dropped from 60bpm to 28bpm...Pretty amazing ****...This is why you hear about those kids falling through ice and drowing but end up being revived after so many hours underwater...



That experiment was done in ice water and I think I could have got my pulse lower if I could take the ice burn on my face. I only lasted 1:30 because it was so painful...



At the surface for the dives it's about 21C and then at the bottom as cold as 14C. The cold combined with the pressure I am guessing the pulse gets into the mid to low 20s per minute.



Here some of the physiological explanations of what happens to the body while diving.
