That's a load of crapass liberal extremism, but hardly unexpected in California. I suspect it will go to a higher court, and be remedied.

phinsup 09-24-2008 10:55 AM

You can't program the masses if they don't go to programming school, err i mean public school

Exactly! People are not sufficiently qualified to teach their children, own a gun, or work on a car. Government can do it better. Just give us all your money, and we will spend it, since you will spend it foolishly.

I've met a lot of homeschooled kids in the cruising/liveaboard section of society, most of these kids can carry on a conversation at 12 years old that is more interesting then the convo's I have 50 year olds around here. They know about the world, politics, events, etc....

They are dangerous, and so are you!

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated!

phinsup 09-24-2008 12:00 PM

We ALL know I'm dangerous or at least considered to be so by the power that be.

j9fd3s 09-24-2008 12:16 PM

we're so screwed in CA, it seems like anything you, or a company does has opposition from somewhere.

btw i heard they were going to fine those berkley tree sitters, like tens of thousands of dollars

75 Repu 09-24-2008 12:34 PM

Yeah California behaves like it is its own country sometimes.

UniqueTII 09-24-2008 12:54 PM

For every "normal" homeschooled kid there are the rest that aren't.

Seriously though, homeschooling is fine if the parents have anything besides the bible to teach with.

75 Repu 09-24-2008 02:24 PM

we met a kid on warcraft that was being homeschooled back when I used to play.. that fucker was on like 16 hours a day it seemed.. seems like their social skills might be hindered but like unique said, the rest is up to the parents and what they choose to teach.

In Virginia, as in most states I suspect, it is necessary for the parents to identify and procure a curriculum from a list of approved curricula. Each curriculum is examined for "suitability" before it makes it on the list. Even homeschoolers are forced to adhere to certain "standards" of education.

phinsup 09-24-2008 02:56 PM

i believe in most states that is the case, there are a lot of home school packages you can buy with a fairly good structure to them.

Baldy 09-24-2008 02:59 PM

There are also groups of homeschoolers that get together regularly, they get a lot of socialization in. At least according to an inter view I heard on NPR.

To be honest if we had a kid I would not send him or her to Florida public schools, I think about the only thing I would expect him to learn in Florida public schools is racism.

Yeah, my oldest is in public Kindergarten, and I'm not getting many warm fuzzies about the situation.

nucular pirate radio?

phinsup 09-24-2008 05:55 PM

Personally I think a good parent is much more likely to engage their child then some under paid teacher, there are certainly good teachers, but what effect to the terrible one's have your child? I think children should learn more from their parents then from their teachers, even if they do go to public schools. Too many parents expect the under paid, crowded schools to raise their children for them and it just doesn't work.

If you are going to have your child raised by the nanny or by the daycare or by the school don't have them, they aren't going to grow up with your belief system or outlook on the world anyhow.

defprun 09-25-2008 01:55 AM

Generally if a parent thinks they are qualified to teach their own child than it usually is the better choice. Not only do they get to control what the child learns, but they also get to spend time with their kid and also get to learn what the child has to speak and what is on their mind so they can tailor-make a suitable curriculum for their skill level.

I personally would've liked that kind of 1 on 1 schooling but in addition had the social setting of a public school as to not become completely socially inept.

Did I already post here about that? How my son, on the first day of school, said he felt dumb because he was white (he's one of 2 white kids in his class of 18).

He's also developing racial stereotypes, because if the majority of the kids in his class do something, he assumes that's what all black people do.

Luckily we haven't hear any mention of these issues after the first week of school, so I dunno. Maybe he just got to know all his classmates better.

No you didn't.

Baldy 09-25-2008 10:56 AM

Oh, haha, stupid websense block nopistons. You need to fix that. It's inhibiting my excess posting abilities.

Did I post about the "The mailman don't work on Labor Day" thing he brought home? It was a pic of a mailman that they colored, with that phrase written above it. The phrase was obviously hand-written, then copied. Not sure if it was the teacher or someone else who made the sheet, but we eventually decided not to bring it up with the teacher. Too much potential for **** hitting the fan.

The mail mAn...don't...work on Labor Day. The wife and I had about a 30 minute bitch fest about that one.

phinsup 09-25-2008 11:26 AM

Oh I'd have been up in that bitch I'd have been at his school the next morning. They don't even teach Cursive writing in washington schools anymore. I dunno about florida, as far as i can tell they barely teach english here, i doubt they get to cursive.

1988RedT2 09-25-2008 12:41 PM

OMG, I hope that don't happen to me! I'll be mighty pretubered if my boy come home with nongrammatical sentences!

TheRX7Project 09-25-2008 02:47 PM

75 Repu 09-26-2008 10:45 PM

I used to watch Weird Al videos in english class.

defprun 09-27-2008 03:26 PM

We used to watch a show called "La petite vie" (A small life) in media class. We only watched it because it was french and it was some sort of media, lol. Weird Al would've been more educational that show was just pointless, really. There was no plot no lesson it was just a lumberjack and some guy in drag as his wife and they would just do stupid **** french families do all day: **** all.
