Stupid bill collectors! Everyday that i get home, i have a message on my machine that says "this is not a sales call, please call 1-800....." I hate that ****! I called a # that was left on my machine once, and got into an argument with the guy on the other end. He wanted me to give him all kind of personal info. I refused because he would not tell me what his employer represented. This went back and forth for a few minutes, and finaly, i said, HEY! do you have on a pink shirt or something? Quit tryin' to get in my ****!

999 just means that its not available

999 -- -- Often used by carriers to indicate that the area code information is unavailable for CNID, even though the rest of the number is present

I used to be a bill collector

But maybe his employer handled lots of different creditors, and without you narrowing down the stack, he wasnt able to tell you which one it was. That happened to me several times. BTW, ask them for their address to "send in a payment," then hit them with a cease and desist phone calls letter. Just tell them they are no longer allowed to call you, and further calls will be registered with the FTC as harassment. They HAVE to abide by this, since its set up through the law that governs collections, the FDCPA. Any calls after this (except for one, they're allowed to tell you they wont be calling anymore, and this to me seems gay) violate your rights, and they are liable for I think something like 5k or 10k in damages if you press the issue and sue with a lawyer who'll take your case.

My brother and his g/f set up a new business line and fax line in our house. Someone kept calling the fax line, it was bill collectors. Evidently the new number their fax got was the previous number of someone named Joan who didn't like to pay her bills. But of course when they kept saying "Joan doesn't live here, you have the wrong number!" I'm guessing the bill collectors didn't believe them.

Didn't matter. Plus it would then not allow them to receive faxes from their office in MN. They complained to the boss of the caller, saying they were losing money in their business because they were missing faxes and such. They stopped calling after she chewed them out, and said she would file harassement charges.

Bill Collectors don't call you if you pay your bills on time...
