what if there's a chalk mark on the cue ball?
i was looking thru my pool table last night. right before the 'return window', the balls hit a slate, then there are two rails, a short one and a taller one (height-wise). the cue ball rolls down the short rail and returns to the back of the table, and the rest of the balls roll down the taller rail, to the window, then down to the rack-end.
